inner body panel painting/welding/etc

I am in the process of replacing rusted out inner body panels on my '67 BJ8, (rocker panel, outer footbox panels, door hinge panels, etc). These panels came primed and I want to prep them as well as I can before welding the various panels that will not be able to be painted after install (inside of rocker panel), any advice? What sort of products has everyone used? I have to already wire wheeled the frame portion where the rocker is welded, it is now down to bare metal. There is also some small pitting but is not rusted thru. Was thinking of priming with an self etching primer then skim coating the imperfections with icing then reprime, etc. I would like to order the paint supplies online and was thinking of going with products from KBS. Any help advice would be great.

weld through primer.

However, if you are replacing sills, etc. remember that typically these cars are not driven like they were back then, meaning in all weather conditions, etc. and are still around. By replacing with new metal, you should be good for another 50 years (car anyways). If you are planning to dive the car through ice, snow and rain in the salt belt, well, you better coat the entire car in rino bed liner...........ha! :driving:

I have used an epoxy mastic - that's the name on this side of the pond, from a company called Rust Buster, they are on the web. It is supposed to stick like the preverbial and I have had no problems so far. They also have another form of epoxy primer that can be sandwiched with filler as you describe but I have not used it myself.
There must be similar materials on your side.

For hidden areas where you won't see them and are not accessible by the final paint, I've had good luck with Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer. The brush on is better for preventing future rust as it seems to have more of the fish oil in it than the spray can version. Don't use it on any place you intend to paint with your car color, for that use the system recommended by who you buy your final paint from. The fellow who mineral blasted my frame used a Dupont Epoxy Primer, so I used compatible Dupont for the final paint.


Good luck with your metal work, its not for the faint of heart!
