Today I decided to dig in and play with the carburetors. Contrary to the horror stories that I had heard otherwise, I found synchronizing the carbs to be a relatively easy task as long as you are patient and willing to make repeated minute adjustments back and forth. I think both my experience working with airplanes and an ear developed from playing music helped me get the carbs "dialed in" to each other.
Reading the manual, it says the idle speed on the 1275 should be about 750 to 800 rpm. However, anytime I dropped the idle speed below 1000 rpm, the generator light began to glow. Is this normal, or is this a sign of a generator heading south? I decided for now to keep the idle speed over 1000 rpm rather than risk discharging the battery. I do have a spare generator that came with the Sprite, so a generator swap is not going to be a huge undertaking.
I also checked the mixture, and as I had suspected, the car was running rich. I did lean out the mixture to the spot where the damper raises the rpms only slightly. The test drive after the adjustments went smoothly. We'll see how the car starts from cold with the new adjustments in a day or two.
It already looked like my gas mileage improved into the mid 20s with the new tires and the fact that the car's body wasn't rubbing the right rear tire due to the damaged spring. It will be interesting to see what effect the carburetor setting changes will have on the car's gas mileage.
