Hand brake/ Parking brake

My hand brake does not hold well. I checked the cables to the wheels and they are so tight you can play a tune on them.
Other than that the regular brakes work good. They are the drum type.
Any suggestions on how to fix the problem?

Are you sure the rear brakes are operating properly? The car will stop even if the rears are out of adjustment since most of the stopping power is in the front brakes. Try operating the hand brake manually by pulling the levers at the rear of the brake drums. They should move without hesitation and return themselves quickly.

New set of wheel cyls did the trick for me. Went ahead and did the kit, shoes, etc.

Thanks for the reply. I will try the parking brake manually first. I never thought of adjusting the rear brakes because the brakes felt ok. I will check the adjustment. If that is the problem it will be an easy fix.

Mine didn't hold well when I first got my car. Adjusting the rear brake shoes fixed the issue for me.

Thanks for your help. Right real wheel cylinder was not even working due to bad seal. Left rear brake way out of adjustment. Ordered two new brake cylinders from Moss. They arrived in 3 days. Adjusted the braks and everything works fine. Thanks so much.
