Spitfire 'Euro' SU on eBay for a Spitfire

My '73 has a single ZS carb and I'm wondering if these would make like simpler than trying to retro fit twin SU on my own...

I suspect they would, indeed. In addition, the seller (Ted Schumacher) is extremely knowledgeable and will happily offer any additional advice needed on fitting these and making any other changes (such as possibly raising compression or changing camshafts, etc.).

Oh, and the price is right, IMO.

These look as though the dash pots are inch and three-quarters, but if they are standard they would be a well worthwhile change. You may also want to check eBay uk as I sold a pair of Spitfire SUs about a year ago and only got £50 (less than $100). They often come up for that sort of money. Even with shipping costs they would work out cheaper.
I've just had a look and there is a pair for £20! Item number 200054169295.

Hi,
I did the same thing for my 74 spit and they work great. I'm currently chasing down the 3.63 crown and pinion gear, new ones are a bit pricey. I already have the gear I need for the overdrive, just need to tear it down and install it. All to keep from having to modify anything with the speedometer. I'm trying to get mine closer to a British spec 1500. When I rebuilt the engine, I had the head milled and flat top pistons installed. Getting it closer to the Non-USA spec'd higher compression 1500s.

Nick, they look to me to be the correct HS4 (1.5") SUs. You make a good point about possible greater availability from the UK. But it's luck of the draw, of course!

Meanwhile, carbs themselves aren't much good here in the US without a proper manifold, and that's the REALLY scarce bit here for the eight-port 1296 or 1493 Spitfire! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

i purchased a set of HS6's for my '76 tr7 fhc from ebay.co.uk. with shipping total was around US$150. I had to revert back to my '76 manifold because the linkage wouldn't work on my '79 manifold. All in all, I like the power band better than the original ZS's or the weber down drafts that I had on there.

They are supposed to have the manifold with them, and I just bought them so we'll see.

Excellent point about potentially buying them from the UK - but I wanted to make sure I had them for when I'm off work. Grin!

I'll report back once they arrive and I'll take pictures etc...

I'm pretty sure all of these twin carb systems come from overseas, since they were never sold in the US. If you are buying a twn carb setup, you need to see the car mounting flange to see if they are 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" carbs. I bought a manifold only hastily one day and found out alter it is for 1 1/4 " carbs. Fine for a 1296, but a little small for a 1500.

I saw these carbs for sale and would have bought them, but I'm nowhere near to needing them.

Read this thread with great interest and just got a complete HS4 set-up off e-bay. Does anyone know the throttle cable part # that would work in my LHD '80 Spit?

Not yet - they are on back order.

The seller is a super nice guy, and can get them as needed from the UK, but not sure of his source in the UK Nick.
