coil spring removal

I plan on doing some front-end work on my BN-6 (king pins, bushings, etc.) and will need to remove the coil springs. My question is, do I need to use a specific spring compressor (Moss=expensive) or can I go on ebay and get any old spring compressor (cheap) for the job? And as a follow-up question, any recommendations for a send-away shop for kingpin resleaving? Thanks

See the post "front spring change - by chapelfarm". Replace two of the four spring pan bolts with long threaded bolts, remove the other two, & gradually unwind the long ones to release spring tension. A small jack under the lower arm sometimes helps to control things. The jack needs to be near the outboard end of the lower arms to get proper leverage & leave room for the spring pan to lower. Be careful, there is a "LOT" of energy stored in the springs.

An Eastern shop such as "White Post Restorations" (www.whitepost.com) or "Hemphill's Healey Haven" (bighealey@msn.com) or "four in tune (www.fourintune.com) should be able to do the job.

I used threaded rod in lieu of long threaded bolts. Worked fine, take you time though.

The first time I dismantled the front suspension on the Frogeye, I did what the book says, and used 2 long bolts to lower the spring pan - a slow job!
Other times on the Frog and the A40 I just put a jack under the outer end, disconnected the top of the king pin and lowered the jack. No it didn't fly out across the garage, yes I did stay out of the firing line just in case!

Is there any reason why this doesn't work on a 100/3000? Maybe the springs are too long when uncompressed?
