I'm making a coil spring compressor out of the 3/4" threaded rod as described on this site. Can't think of anything suitable for the bottom plate???....TR4Nut used a VW generator pulley. Anyone got any other ideas. Karl

Karl-

I think you have me confused with tr3driver (aka Randall), which is a compliment to me, but probably not to Randall!

Here is a picture of what I used for a compressor:

For the bottom plate, I doubled up on some thick metal (Simpson's Strongties from Home Depot). Doubled up because I was worried it wasn't stout enough - as built it worked fine. I drilled holes to match up with the studs holding the lower shock mounts.

Also used a short bushing to drop the bottom nut lower so that I could unthread easier - if you can find something like that I recommend it as it makes it easier to release the spring.

Dunno if they still do, but my local Home Depot used to sell flat metal stakes that would work nicely, if you can cut and drill one. About 3" wide by 1/4" thick by maybe 3' long with a tapered end. Intended for holding concrete forms, I believe (has staggered nail holes along the length).

Another possiblity might be a cast iron plumbing "floor flange" (intended to locate pipes to a floor where they pass through).

Or yet another might be to section an old TR brake rotor (if you have one of those lying around).

A natural mistake, as my parents called me Randy for many, many years. And I was born less than 200 miles west of Katy.

The resemblance breaks down with Triumphs tho ... I've only owned one TR4 :jester:

I used the below configuration at first, but as you can see, that metal plate was too thin (they worked, and I used the shock mounting brackets fastened OVER them to prevent slippage, but still a little risky). I found some good BIG heavy duty washers to replace those flimsy plates and the washers worked fine (I stacked two big ones on the bottom and some additional washers to cover the hole on the big washers). No problems. AND, I used my floor jack as back-up.

I bought this one from either TRF or Moss, can't remember which. The plate is 4.5" x 2.5" x .5" thk Al.
Never added photos , but I could send you some if you wish.
