BJ8 tonneau cover

Ordered a new tonneau cover and just had it out of the box to see what is involved for fitment.

What are the four rectangular flaps on top of the cover for? Two larger ones just above the front of the seats and two smaller ones just behind the back of the seats? The smaller ones have a cut out underneath the flap but the larger ones do not. Some pictures I have seen online seem to show these flaps secured down with press studs?

The large cut outs handle the over the shoulder seat belts.

The small ones let you fold the cover down over lugage on the rack and secure it to the back panel studs just below and in front of the rearseats.

The large flaps on my tonneau have lift a dot fasteners in them. I believe the idea is that you secure each unzipped side to studs on the bulkhead below the rear seats, but my car does not have such studs (possibly it did in the past). Of course, just stuffing the tonneau behind the seat when unzipped works fine!

Cleah, you are correct, by snapping them onto the studs, the tonneau stays taut over the bar doesn't buffet at speed. My '67 BJ8 is original & has them, think my '63 BJ7 does also.

I've considered getting one for my BJ7 but don't see the point since we have an easy-up convertible top and rollup windows. Tonneau covers are indispensable for cars w/o side curtains but why have one on a BJ7 or BJ8? I'm not knocking it, just curious why one would want one when it's so easy to raise the top and windows.

Why? because that's how they were sold & IMO less wind buffeting, also keeps prying eyes out of what's inside. Protects from those occasional showers which the PNW is famous for.. cheers P.S. always had top down unless weather was extreme.

How does a tonneau fit over the folded top? My top is always down (except for washing the car) and I always keep the boot cover on and it rides pretty high. On my TR3 the sticks for the convertible top sit inside the jump seat so the tonneau fits flat but I'm having a hard time picturing a tonneau on a BJ7 or 8. Anyone have a pic?
Edit: Never mind - I Googled it and see how it looks.

What Genos said, but with one important addition: They look darned cool, and in my opinion is one of the things that make a sports car sporting.

Up until the time you answered the riddle of what those two extra flaps were for, I thought they got me 20 extra points for this question On the "Does Your Car Have Character" test: https://www.britishcarforum.com/bcf/showthread.php?97750-Does-Your-Car-Have-Character

23. Five points for every “Lift-the-Dot” snap on your weather equipment that doesn’t line up with any visible stud on the body.
