... are is it even necessary. The Service Parts List shows an item 14A4687 Packing - bonnet hinge that is shown between the bonnet hinge and the bonnet. The original was made from a tar paper like material similar to that for the master cylinder/pedal box and the blanking plate. This item is not listed as available with any of the usual sources.

I found some 2mm high density foam in a crafts store this week and decide it would be ideal for re-creating this item. The following link is my first cut at a template and prototype. www.spritespot.com/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=Whitephrog-off-to-the-stripper&page=16

So the question is whether this make any sense or not. Is something like this even necessary?

Stop by where they are putting on a new roof. Get a few scraps of tar paper.

Works great and I suspect that was what was in the orginial.

I've though about that. I'm in the residential development business so I have ample opportunity and supply. As anal as I am about originality, the thought of tar paper on my "pristine" paint job has always bothered me. That's why the foam looked appealing.

I would use a "kraft" paper, such as is used to insulate building walls. that way the "tar" from the tar paper dos not ooze out and make a mess when it gets hot or when it is squeezed down with the bolts.

I feel you would be fine,

Felt paper was the cost effective replacement for a rubber gasket during this time period, plus easily attainable. the new vehicles use the 3-1 foam (similiar to what is used under laminate floors)alot, and I am sure they researched the subject.

You are correct in having concern about new paint. The felt paper does have oil solvents that could very easily chemically react with new paint solvents causing the two products to jell together, become adhesive,or discolor paint.

This is why you never put rubber backed bathroom rugs on top of a vinyl floor. I have seen them get sticky, discolored. Also just so everyone knows also DO NOT use vinagar and water mixtures on any new floors to clean.that have "aluminum oxides" in wear layers. Same deal your finish could suffer and become soft

When I took my bonnet off there wasn't anything between the hinge and bonnet. Didn't even know that there was anything that needed to go there.

What does this gasket provide? I need to reinstall my bonnet soon, and now want to know if I need to add this back in.

I do not think anything is need betwwen the bonnet and the hinge. Both are steel and painted. What is the big deal? Other places use an insulator between dis-similar materials, but no need here. I'm putting my bonnet on (the car that is) in a month or two, and I'm not using anything.

Your point is well taken. I believe this is closed cell foam. I ran water over the foam and it repelled water very well. I'm going to leave it in water overnight to see if it absorbs water.

Never had gasket on bonnett but the gasket on the clutch and brake mount plate and the blanking plate on the passanger side keeps the water out. By all means use what ever gasket you like, after all it can not be seen. Think I used thick gasket material from Ace Hardware.
