Air Filter for Stromberg 175's

I own a 1962 TR3B, but the engine is not the original that was delivered with the car. I have no idea when it was switched as I just received the car in early May of 2007. The engine when it was built wass TCF/141-E, but it now has CT39529E. This engine has a pair of Stromberg-Zenith 175's and it has the emission control plumbing going out of the center of each air cleaner. For now I just need filter inserts for the air cleaners as the ones that came with the car are filthy. It looks like the inserts would be about a 5-3/4 inch O.D. and about 1-1/4 inch thick. What filters should I be ordering?

Sorry for such a basic question, but I am a mechanical novice, and don't want to purchase a lot of incorrect parts for my new toy.

Hi Dave:

From the CT prefix of your engine and the ZS carbs, my guess is you have a later TR4 engine. The engine number on my '62 TR4 is CT16712E.

Looking at the Moss catalog,

Moss Catalog - ZS Carburetor

... none of the air cleaners they show (#95, #98, #100) have replaceable filter elements. Filter #98 (371-505) is the one I assume you have.

I have SU H6 carbs and a road draft tube on my TR4, so I don't have any of the emission plumbing coming out the center of the filters (I use filter #100).

The air cleaner with the spot for the plumbing is also in the Victoria British catalog ( Victoria British )for a little cheaper: 3-178 $14.95

This is what the original set-up would look like on the engine you have:

Those permanent air cleaners are available from time to time on eBay. Condition not too important as the original finish is pretty easy to duplicate and the decals are available.

If you do not have the curvy hoses that connect the 'Y' fitting to the cleaners... know that I attempted to order a set from Moss and found what they supplied to be nothing like the originals. In the end just rehabbed my old ones.

A long-term plan could be to get a set of SUs, the black air cleaners, a TR3B/early TR4 valve cover (no tube outlet, breather cap in rear, brass hex plug in top middle) and add a breather pipe to make the thing look like a TR3B engine.

This is the confirmation of what I had thought was correct, but not sure. For now I will order new filters, but look to making the car more correct in the future. You both have helped me a lot in my learning curve.
