A "failure-to-procede" event.

A "failure-to-procede" event.

10,000 miles with no problem and we had a fuel delivery problem.
Had to have the TR6 brought home on a flatbed. We were only about 10 miles from home but in an area where everyone knows us

Finally got time to check things out. Every thing is fine except the pivot pin in the pump is missing. Pump and parts look great and it pumps with the manual lever just fine. So, new pin tomorrow and car show tomorrow night. I have to say the rest of the pump looks like new.

On TR3s the original pumps had that pin secured with s clip on each end. Aftermarket 'repros' relied on a pressed-in pin which I have had fall out.

Never trusted that pump after that (even though I retrieved the pin and JBWelded in place). Finally tossed the thing and got the correct original.

Don't know if TR6s always used a pressed pin or not, just a thought.

I had that happen on my GT6. I think it's about the same pump. After pressing the pin back in, I took a punch and peened both ends to tighten things up a bit. That was about 6 years ago and no problems since.

Aloha Tom,

Like Geo, I had that happen with an after market TR3 fuel pump. The TR6 pump although it looks different from the TR3 pump, the pump sections (operating lever, diaphram and pin) are basically the same. I fixed my pump with the missing pin by replacing it with something from a hardware store, I think it was a clevis pin resembling a large nail. In any case I think you will need a 1/4" diameter pin (verify the dimension) and long enough to fit through the fuel pump. Allow for a small lenght to protrud from the pump body so you can drill the pin and insert a cotter pin and that should keep the pin in place.

Re: A "failure-to-procede" event.

I wondered if anyone else had had this happen. I am running an original style Italian made replacement pump. The pump seems very well made but the pin worked out. It is a .250 dia. by 1.250 pin that was staked in place. To be honest, I was glad it was something like that. Could have been more serious.

Jim, is that show going to be down your way again this year?

Re: A "failure-to-procede" event.

I wish this would have come up about the pins on some of the fuel pumps early last year. I would have been looking at that. Going to a show about 30 miles from home had the TR3 quit. Found that the pin had come out and the arm had got down in the oil pan. The new pump that Moss sent the pin does not go through the case but is pinned in a cavity and also will be held in place when bolted to the block.

Tom - stinks to have to call a trailer but if that is the only issue after 10,000 miles I think you are doing OK!

I am certainly not complaining. Especially since it was a freak thing that could happen to any vehicle with a mechanical pump.

I do have to admit that I am glad it did not happen while we were in the UP a couple weeks ago!

Just returned from Fastenal with what I need to make the repair. Got a couple of other things too - $3 total. And they were really nice about it.
