I have two TR4's and did a TR3 with Herman's Toyota conversions. Just what is your issue with the gas pedal shaft?

I also have done Herman's conversion. No problem with the gas pedal. Tell us more about the issue.

The issue is that the pedal shaft is resting right on top of the rear engine plate there is no gap between them thus making the pedal very stiff

Have you checked the bushings on the pedal shaft?

Don't have my manual in hand but check the orientation of the rubber insulators on the rear gearbox mounts. ISTR having mine confused at first on my 4A with the rubber mount installed on the wrong side of the bracket. Also there are two different rear mounts, 4A and TR6 so maybe you kit was packaged with the wrong mounts?

On the TR4 the cross shaft for the accelerator is almost one inch above the lowest portion of the firewall which is above the engine and transmission. So either your cross shaft is bent or the shaft is not in the bushings on the passenger side. On the TR3 and TR4 it is not possible for the engine or transmission to be high enough to touch the accelerator shaft as they would contact the firewall first. So stated another way make sure that your accelerator shaft is higher than the lowest part of the firewall at the center of the car.
