Stag 1971 Triumph Stag questions

Not that I haven't spent enough time and money restoring my Austin Healey 3000, but I have an opportunity to spend more. My cousin has a 1971 Triumph Stag sitting in his garage. It has been sitting there for 25 years. Dark blue, wire wheels, no rust and a nice interior (well if the rodents haven't got to it). But it doesn't run and he hasn't tried it for the 25 years. He thinks it is a timing chain issue, but is unsure. I don't know the mileage on this because he has so many things stacked on and around the car that I can't open the door, but since it hasn't run for so long I expect it to be low. Figuring the engine may need some or a lot of work, brakes should be rebuilt, etc. what is a 1971 Stag worth? If I decide to pass on this and someone in the Northwest is interested, I will see if my cousin is willing to sell it to someone else. He owns and drives a 56 Vette and a 57 Jag XK 140, but I guess since he is getting up in years doesn't have the desire to get the Stag running himself.

Hey Shorn,
Definately a niche market. Try communicating with some of the Stag clubs, which you probably have already done. People either love them or hate them. The thing that might be a selling point is if indeed the body is solid. Engines are cheap in comparison.

Timing chains were a common problem. I say you're going to need to rebuild the motor, since you'll have to address that problem anyway. From what I understand, the motor is interference fit, so who knows what damage may lie inside. Only experience I've had inside one was removing the head studs for a buddy... Lot's of fun. I now own that car, but it's wrecked. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif (<font color="purple">but all there, and perererple! )</font> My other car has a crappy Buick 231 in it. VP? Now that's a scary thought! None will be on the road for real in the distant near future. I've got an electric powered RX7 race car to finish for a deceased /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif memeber of the EA for the '06 Challenge... Busy, busy, busy!
