    Servicing BJ8 drum brakes

    Guys,

I have rebuilt my cars front brake calipers, brake booster and most of the lines lines but have never fiddled with the rear drum brakes. They are not giving me any trouble presently nor have they but want to be proactive on the service. A search of the forum yields no results as to just how to maintain the system back there. I have never had the drums off to check the pads so I know that's the first thing but how about greasing, cleaning and lubricating for maintenance sake? Thanks!

First, don't blow the dust off with compressed air - it's not good for your health. You need to bleed the brake fluid every couple of years. If the rubber dust seals on the cylinders are cracking, you should rebuild the cylinders. Also check for free movement and corrosion. If the cylinder doesn't move slightly on the back-plate, clean it up and use some anti-seize. Also, the friction material is "shoes" on drum brakes, not "pads".

New, 'no name' rear cylinder for BJ8 from Moss: $17.49
    Rebuild kit for same: $12.99

I just installed a 'no name' on my BJ8; quality appeared to be as good as the original Girling that was shot.
