I bought my BJ7 in 2002 and it came with modifications - namely the horn push and the indicator were not working as a unit and a PO had installed an indicator switch and a push button horn in a panel under the heater control unit. I could not get on with that so bought the proper horn push and indicator for an adjustable steering wheel and installed it within a month of buying the car.
Early this year the little silver turn knob fell off in my hand, it has a built in rivet fixing that had failed. So as a short/long term fix I used one of those glues that are activated by UV light. All was well until an extremely wet fishing trip to Wales in the Healey showed up the weakness in the glue system - it did not like the damp and became unstuck.
Today I decided to lavish some more TLC on the old girl and took the bull by the horns and fixed it properly. The rear of the knob is recessed out to receive the lever arm for the turn signal, there is also a built in protruding 'rivet' that locates into a hole in the lever and is punched to create the fixing, this had failed.
Using a sewing needle mounted in a pillar drill I centred the 'rivet' of the knob in the drill vice and used a 1mm drill bit as the pilot I drilled a hole down through the defunct rivet into the body of the knob. Using a 2.5mm drill bit the hole was enlarged and what was left of the rivet was removed. The hole was then tapped 5BA and an M3 screw was made into a 5BA screw. Using a short dumpy screw driver the silver knob was then installed onto the lever - worked a treat.
