Who drove their Triumph today?

Yesterday after cleaning all the leaves off the lawn, I thought, it is cloudy and cold but I may as well take the TR3A into storage. So off I went (and for the first time in 20 years, off I went with no tools or preparation of any kind to the storage site). Well the Gods had a field day. The trip started with the top down and no rain. Then the first break down happended. I called my wife to come bring tools. While waiting for her the rain started. At least the rain started slowly enough that I was able to get the top on (though the side curtains were still back home). Then she cam and I was able to fix the car and get it running again. At this point I had to decide to go back home or continue to storage. Home was closer so naturaly I decided to go to the storage site.

Off I went in the rain with wife behind in the family car. I stop to buy gas so as to have a full tank and while waiting in line for my turn at the pump it dies again. Same problem, but I have no part but I can jurry rig it. Fill up with gas and decide that since I am in for a penny I might as well be in for a pound and off I head to the storage location.

I am at about half way there and it starts to snow. first time since I have had that car (1979) that snow has touched it. I think, cool , I am driving in snow and there is no salt on the road, how often will I get a chance to do this. Then I am all happy about how well the wippers keep the snoww off the car. I should not have been so happy. Just then the right wipper can no longer push the snow off to the right and it slipps cog. Then the engine dies again. This time I am in a light blizzard of whet snow on a busy road. My wife parks the family car behind to block for me while I fix it yet again.

Back in I get (all wet) and I discover that some how there is a leak that drips watter on my left foot. I make it to about half a mile from storage and not the snow has let up and I feel I am home free. WRONG! One more break down and jurry rig before I can park the thing for the winter.

By the time I got her parked and tucked away for the season I was wet and cold, but it was so fun(ny) that I felt fine about the whole thing. After all I got to drive the TR3A in the snow.

So the short answer to the question is YES I DROVE MY TRIUMPH TODAY. What a drive. And I still have to get the TR4A into storage (but first I want to get the roof on it).

Drove my TR6 to the new "Crystal Cove" which is now called
Cars and Coffee at the Ford Design Center (Ford's Premium Auto Group Building) Irvine, Calif.
Lots of great LBC's and a maybe a few hundred other classic cars, including some very special old Ferrari's.
Plus Dan Gurney and family.

I needed to cut some foam insulation for my shop in the garage bay where I park the 3A , so I decided to take the 3A on the long loop. The top was in the boot and the sidecurtains were off. It was cool and my normal woohoo was muffled a bit by shivering but it was as fun as on a 72degree day. I had the heat on and flipped on the seat heaters for the first time. They took a while to warm up but are toasty warm.

This winter, I'll remove the front apron for panel alignment, and while I'm in there, pull the radiator and timing cover to seal up leaks, and then while I'm in there, so the front end and steering box rebuilds, and while... We'll see how much really gets done...

I guess I might have to give up on "Indian summer." There's snow on the ground in Wisconsin. I know it's not going to stay but, the forcasts don't show any warming trend. I AM going to drive Ol Yeller one more time though. heck or High water.

Went for what might be the last drive of the season in the TR4 Sunday morning; too much work to do on it this winter, so I have to get started ASAP. I enjoyed it so much that I went out for another one in the afternoon. I only got it back on the road earlier this month after its barn "nap" - sigh.

Adrio just maybe a trailer is in order??
I got mine into storage around the 16th with out incident as follows:
Put "Red to Bed" for the winter on Sat. boo hoo!
Significant Other asked if I was was having speedometer problems when she caught up to me at the storage location...

Went for a brisk drive Monday to the Home depot and then around town.
I'm just trying to get in as many drives before the long cold winter days ahead! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

Ok, it wasn't actually driving, but I dragged my garage find 1962 TR4 out of the former owner's garage today with my Range Rover. The rear brakes had seized.

My garage find:

I was behind the wheel steering it while another drove the Rover. Is that close enough? I hope to having it running by Wednesday.

Dispite my voltage regulator problems, I couldn't resist driving Greenie to work again today. I turned on the lights, cranked up the heater blower and played the radio to take up most of the excess charge. And it was a short drive, so I'm not too worried about melting the battery.

Don't you just love them, even though it is totally irrational. There is something very special about these last few drives of the season. I am not really sure why, but I really do enjoy driving my TR at the end of the season. Maybe it is that stolen moment feeling!
Strange how journeys in adverse weather in the TR are remembered for much longer than drives on perfect summer days. Two drives really stick in my memory, one driving my TR4 across to the west of Scotland on a stormy wet day, having to take detours to avoid flooded roads and fallen trees. Then discovering that our ferry to Ireland had been cancelled! The other was when I drove over a mountain pass in the snow and passed another TR4 coming the other way.

Great shot Nick-- beautiful rugged area and helps us feel the cold/wet.
Perhaps because of global warming or whatever, the last decade our temps have crept up from 50's to upper 60's several times during the winter. I've been able to drive mine at least a couple times most months, so never completely winterize the car.

I put the top up on Ol Yeller and fired it up. I put the "winter juice" in the fuel tank, drove to the station and topped it off and I'm going to tuck her in for the winter. Now, this doesn't mean that it won't be driven if and when it gets above 50 deg, but right now, it doesn't look like that's going to happen. It's about 35 right now and it's 11:00 Am.

i did and will continue to drive it every day! does anyone know what can be done to eliminate oil being forced out from under the valve cover due to excess pressure inside???? i have installed webers and have vented the valve cover to one of the air cleaners. the car runs great, except for the humongous amount of oil that keeps leaking out through the oil cap and anywhere else the seal can be broken. HELP

Now that I've got Greenie's charging issue resolved, I drove him to work today. I meant to bring my camera and include a photo of the Nation's Capital from a great vantage point I drive every day, but perhaps tomorrow!

It was 45 degrees, but sunny, so I refuse to put the top up.

Happy motoring!

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gifits just not as much fun with the top up! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif Amen to that! And I have to admit that this is finally perfect tonneau weather. I *love* the look and feel of driving with the tonneau on when I'm alone, and when it's 85 degrees outside, it just traps too much heat around me. But on a day like today, sunny and hitting a high of 53 or so, the tonneau makes it all cozy. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

Ok I gave in and put the top up so I could drive to work today.
Yeah it's chilly but at least it's dry.
I found the bad ground for the heater fan so now I have some warm air in the car.

just not as much fun with the top up! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

My top doesnt help me any on rainy days like we are having today here in Maryland. My drivers side window leaves a gap between itself and the weather stripping on the top by about a quarter inch!

I suppose I should say it's the weather stripping on the top, and not the window.... which is a shame, as the rest of the top is in mint shape.
