Well my Midget made it home... Need Help!

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

I'll feel better after an oil change, can't remember the last time and I may have crud in the old oil after the head R&R. Going to take it easy until I have fresh oil.

Just curious...what is that engine's redline?
80 HP for starters sounds sweet!

I'm not sure what a stock A15 redlines at, but with the GX head (has double valve springs) 7000+RPM's is not unheard of. Get a bigger cam and they can spin over 8000 RPM.

80+ HP makes driving a Spridget entertaining....well, more entertaining than it already is.

I hear that! My BE is on the + side of 80 hp and it is more
fun than a barrel of monkeys! It's modified just a bit.

Here is a shot of that head for Kurt:

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

crud - front carb started pouring gas out it's vent - gotta go look at that now...

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

Looks allot like the 1500 head. Must be nice to have a motor you can spin w/o having to worry it's gonna go BOOM. What all does it take to put an A15 in a spridget? (just wondering)

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

Rick: A warning! Check out the 1200 datsun wiki on heads and make sure yours is oiling the valve train correctly now. Seems the GX head is for the early engines and they oil differently than the late.
Info I have shows the smog A15 datsun as only a little more powerful than the 1500 bmc motor. I believe it is considerably tougher though. As to fitting it, it is not a drop in. Not too bad in a 1500 midget though since you have the correct rad and crossmember mods already. Then it is a motor mount and intake and exhaust routing problem. Also pan clearance, Datsun trans we already are using.
Thanks for the pic's, Bill, I think I want it. Meet with you off the list.
Kurt.

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

Right you are, I've actually got a later head not a "true" gx.
It's the H72 and came with smog equipped cars.
Pull that crud off and plug some holes and you've got a good head that works with the later motors.
Believe me, I spend considerable time on the Datsun 1200 Wiki.

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

Hey Rick, what heads am I supposed to keep an eye out for? Is yours rare? I've found two 210's and was wondering if anything was worth saving off of them.

My Bugeye is mostly stock....not any real hacking done to get the A15 in there, but the rail where the steering rack mounts was cut out and reinforced to make room for the crank pulley. Also new motor mount brackets were welded in.......other than that, the body/chassis is stock.

To clear the front crossmember, the oil pan was cut and modified to fit. I also have a remote oil filter (huge 1 quart filter) to make up the lost volume and because it is impossible to fit a filter in the stock location on my car.

The transmission fits using the stock trans bolt holes (has what appears to be a custom trans mount & bracket). The driveshaft is modified too.

The PO did a nice job on the install......it's pretty clean. I am debating keeping it or installing a newer twin cam engine......it's a toss up because rebuilding the A15 like I want will be more expensive than a low mile 4AGE black or silver top will cost and I'll never see 160HP out of the A15. I guess I will cross that bridge if/when the A15 lets go.

As for what to look out for.....head-wise you want closed chamber oval port heads (heart shaped chambers). The 1200GX was never imported into the US, but a few made it here anyway. Nissan sold a similar head through there performance division that will fit later engines (my Bugeye has this head). A run of the mill 210 will probably not have this head, but you never know. If you find one with twin flat top Hitachi SU clones then it is probably a GX or performance head. Grab it and you can make a few bucks.

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

Front carb leaking gas out overflow.

I pulled it and flipped it over and took it apart.
It already has a plastic float.

The float valve seats and shuts off, I put it back together and the thing is still pouting gas out the overflow pipe with the key on.

Either the float has a hole in it or it is sticking.
I'll have to take it apart again tomorrow.

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

That's no good....I hope you figure it out. BTW.....what do you want for that Datsun tach??

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

that's just a picture I got at datsun1200

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

So... how is the float oriented in the car? I'm still concerned about the angle of the carbs.

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

Thought about that, but the back one is working fine at the same angle.
These don't have to be level and plumb to work - right?

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

I don't know about the HIF's ,b ut a float 'pposed to be level most of it's life. I could be causing your problem. It could be a bad viton tip on one too. What's the throat size on those?

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

The throats are 1.5 inches.
I was also thinking it could be the tip of the valve, it looks like black rubber - maybe it's shrunk?
When I took it apart I hooked up a tube to the fuel inlet and blew in and air would flow with the float down and stop with the float up.

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

Ground.
Jags have them, too, but in the bottom of the intake on a 2.4L.
Bikes used to have them, so you could "tickle" the carb before starting and not get gasoline all over the coil.

The purpose is to get any leaks away from exhaust, starter motor, spark, so you don't go "BOOM!".

Did you take the float valve seat out and make sure nothing is stuck in the throat holding the tip open?

Usually, pulling the bowl and emptying it, then re-starting will flush small shXt out of the seat and off the tip.

What was in the bottom of the boawl when you took it off?

Did you shake the float next to your ear and listen for "slosh"?

Need me to make a high-speed run over there?

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

I have to take it apart again today after work.
I'll follow your instructions, could easily be something in the seat.
Wish there was someplace local to get parts & pieces for these.
