Well my Midget made it home... Need Help!

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

O.K, you hook up the line wrong, feed it way too much fuel and then drove the crap out of it. Have you checked to see if your oil got diluted from it flooding so bad?

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

Yes, apparently it was running bad enough to make me miserable but not dumping fuel enough to dilute the oil. I'm due for a change anyway so I'll do that.
I was worried about it, I've had that happen before with a bad set of SU's.

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

Yes Kurt- yesterday when Rick was here he noticed that one of the engines that i have on Craigslist has that fabled "peanut heads" on it so I guess that I will pull it and sell it separately- you will still need to find the manifold and carbs separately.

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

Interesting that Bill did not catch that mistake. It was one of the "problems" in the "start the midget" contest at LotO.

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

I would have had to see an HIF before to know anything about them!!

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

I thought you participated in start the Midget contest. We guessed that the fuel line was connected wrong because we knew they wouldn't want us taking the carb apart to unstick a float.

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

Nope- wasn't part of that. Prop and I were standing by the side just watching.

Wow - the GX head and a pair of 1.5 inch carbs is WAY freaking better performance than the econo head and the little hitachi downdraft.

I take off from the line now like amazing and it just pulls and pulls and pulls.
This is nothing short of amazing!!

!

I can't imagine it would pull any harder than a regular 1500 going from solex to euro duals. ( at least I don't want to think that, but I like the way your carbs are canted.)

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

Well I don't know as I haven't driven a "regular 1500" ever.

There are specs out there saying how many HP each version delivers.
The British 1500 vs the Nissan 1500 - I don't know how they compare in HP.

Just comparing apples to apples, I am comparing the Nissan 1500 with the econo head and the econo downdraft carb to the same motor with the performance head and the pair of 1.5 inch carbs.
It's way better now than before.

My first drive to work, freeway speeds - very nice!
It starts up and is ready to go, it used to be a pretty bad cold start motor.
At 70 mph on the freeway it's still got a lot of get up and go if I need it.
It even sounds better!
Now I can put a normal hood (no bump) on the thing too.

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

The info I've found so far says the stock Nissan 1500 produces 80 HP and the stock Triumph 1500 as installed in the Midget sits at 53 HP.

I have no stats on how these numbers are affected by switching to a performance setup - my seat of the pants experience says there is a power increase when doing this to the Nissan.

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

I thought the Datsun motor was only 55 hp or so. I didn't realize they put out that much. You migha gotten another 10-15 hp. That sounds like fun!!!

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

I've always estimated my A15 w/GX head & carbs at 90-100 horses (it has to be more than the stock 80HP). One of these days I'll spring for a dyno session. Enjoy your new found power Rick.....now you can start racing people at stoplights.

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

The Datsun guys say just the switch to the SU's equals at least 10 HP.
Adding bigger intakes and bigger valves and a better performance designed head could easily add up to at least another 5 or 10.
It winds up rpm's a lot quicker now for sure!!

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

Just curious...what is that engine's redline?
80 HP for starters sounds sweet!

I have no idea - I haven't taken it above 5500 rpm.
I don't know what it can do, between the State Troopers and my fear of fiery painful death I haven't gone past 90 mph.

Maybe after I get my 5 speed.

I'm not sure what a stock A15 redlines at, but with the GX head (has double valve springs) 7000+RPM's is not unheard of. Get a bigger cam and they can spin over 8000 RPM.

80+ HP makes driving a Spridget entertaining....well, more entertaining than it already is.

Frank sez he wants to see 100MPH. I have had my Bugeye up over 100 MPH a few times. Nothing dramatic as long as your suspension is working well, but any bump in the road will get you airborne so I stay in the 80MPH area when I'm cruising the highways. I'm Ok with Troopers and a fiery death, but don't like the painful part.

Re: Well my Midget made it home...

I've driven MGB & MGC up past the limit of the speedo but am a little older & wiser now. Well maybe a lot older and a little wiser...
Maybe I just need a nice place to go where they let you drive fast.

Here's the Datsun tach from datsun1200:

Very nice. Those Japanese engines sure do spin !
Should be fun running up through the gears. :driving:
