Valve timing

I’m getting close to adjusting my valves and the magic 13 has me scratching my head. I have a thought I wanted to run by you all and see if I’m just out in left field.
On a BJ8, each cylinder fires 120° after the previous one. If I lined the engine up #1 TDC of the compression/ power stroke, both intake and exhaust valves (1 & 2) would be closed allowing for adjustment. My rear axle is a 3.909, so in 4th gear if I rotate the rear wheel 120°x 3.909=469°, I should be TDC of cylinder #5. Adjust those 2 valves (9 & 10) and continue along with the firing order. To get an accurate 469°, I would remove the knock-off, leave the wheel on and install a cam degree wheel with one of those expanding rubber plugs inside the hub. What am I missing? Sorry, but it sounds like you are making this much harder than it is. If the wheels are on and on the ground just push the car (in third gear, plugs out or loose) until whichever valve is completely open (rocker arm in the down position) and subtract that valve number (counting from the front) form 13 and check the feeler gauge on that gap. ie,valve five open, check gap on valve 8. Then push car until the next rocker opens (I don't remember the sequence they open in but its easy to see) You then only have to make one rotation through the valves. For 4 cylinder cars you use 9 as the magic number but everything else is the same.
 
Unfortunately, my garage has a steep grade right at the entrance. So stopping it at the right point would be pretty hard, and there is no going back.
 
I talked with a mechanic recently, he says he uses a remote starter trigger, right at the engine. I'm going to do my car with him later this month, to learn how to do it.
 
Thank you, Tahoe Healey, for your valve timing formula. It has the virtue of being simple and easy to remember. Does it work on V-8's and V-12's?
 
Thats how I set my valves with a trigger switch at the starter solenoid, you can just bump it with the plugs removed and get the valves dead on. Skip
 
Hi Greg, Whoopee,Just put the car in neutral block the rear wheels set the hand brake and use the starter solenoid button or a remote starter switch to bump the engine.Use the fanblade to set it spot on for adjusting the valves.---Fwiw---Keoke
 
Hi Dar100, if you have a remote starter switch all you have to do is connect one lead to the Red/White wire on the starter solenoid and the other end to any hot 12 Volt car source.The tranny must be in neutral and set the hand brake.when you activate the remote starter switch the engine will turn over. I totally agree with Skip & Keoke. With a little practice at starter bumping, you can get "right on". If you miss the first try just bump the engine around again. Watch for the intake valve to close & turn an additional 3/8 to 1/2 of a revolution. Until you get familiar with the process, stuff a small stick down the plug hole to gage when the piston is at TDC firing.
