TR6 TR6 Builders STOP TILL WE TALK COOLING

I have a theory that is outlandish; unbelieveable; and I
have photographic evidence to substantiate my theory.

Reading comments from numerous 6 owners on the Forum, a
common "thread" (no pun again) is that we seem to be concerned
with our cars running hot/overheating, especially during
idling. My personal experience as well.

Upon close scrutiny before installing my head gasket, I
believe it is quite possible that a few of our water
jacket holes are being covered up by the presently-marketed
head gaskets.

I count seven orifices that I think are designed to move
water for cooling through the head. Three of those seven
are blocked/covered up by the head gasket. My old one's
hole pattern matches exactly the hole pattern on the new
head gasket as well.

If what I am seeing is true, means we are blocking water
flow to the head by something like 40 percent????

This is so unbelievable a find that I leave huge room for
my error and ignorance; but, I can and will post pictures
of my old head gasket with evidence of water seepage in
and around the area of a blocked hole...my engine's water
pump trying to do it's job????....which, by the way, could
possibly lead to the head gasket's early demise.

Very sorry, Forum family, to shake this skeleton and leave;
but, I must go to work and compiling the evidence will take
more time than I have.

Hopefully, we'll be looking at this and sorting it out,

I've never had an overheating problem, although I know it is common in some TR6's. I really don't think that the head gaskets could have been made incorrectly, but I've been wrong before and probably will be again.

You could shoot some compressed air down one of the blocked holes as see where it comes out. Or probe it with a wire and see if it bottoms out. Well worth investigating IMO.

First check both the block and head and see if there are corresponding holes in each {Holes that match up with each other} and if they in fact go through to the water jacket. If they do, then I`d say you need corresponding holes in the head gasket also.
When castings are cast there are stress relief holes in certain areas. From bolck to head these relief holes wouldn`t necessarily match up. In which case matching holes in the head gasket would not be necessary.

can you drill out the head gasket where the holes are suppose to be and dress them up with a dremmel tool????

If you need to make a hole, use a hand punch. Cheap to buy a set from HF and very useful if you ever need to make gaskets.

Okay. First the response from the Vendor....should I
name them....?

Response: Oh, yeah. You mean there is a couple of
water jackets that are covered up by the head gasket?
Yeah, I get calls on that all the time. Will make
absolutely no difference whatsoever. No big deal.

So, he seems to suggest install her and good to go.
Sounds like it has worked for others already.

First I want to show the open and closed (blocked)
passages on my old head gasket. It matches my new
head gasket perfectly. The #'s 1, 2 and 3 are blocked; with
#4 and #5 being open:

This next photo is a close-up of one closed or blocked
opening and one open. Notice the rust showing evidence
of water seepage in the "field" area of the head.
I think that if that water were to breach the outside
edge of the gasket, wouldn't it qualify for a "leaking
head gasket"? IMHO, this water was being forced to
squeeze out from this place that has been covered by
the gasket and my poor ole water pump is trying to do
its job pushing water through this blocked hole.

In a previous post I said I counted 7 holes. Here I
show five. Previously I counted the really big funny
shaped holes at each end as well; but taking just the
smaller hoes with the same dimentions, actually makes
things sound worse: Five holes; three blocked. Doesn't
sound good. I'll be modifiying my gasket, even though
I've been told it's cool. I'd rather let it breath.

On many engines some waterways are blocked by the gasket ,to create a flow of coolant round the engine DO NOT alter the gasket, you could create hot spots where the coolant doesn't flow and just gets caught up in turbulence like a whirl pool, leving the thermostat out can cause the same problem

Okay. Thanks, Mike. I have talked with another
mechanic who has shared the same sentiment with me.
Says do not change the gasket. So, for all my
efforts, I am back to installing the gasket as is.

Takes me a while to get there at times. Overly
analytical? Just do not want to screw up, I suppose.

After all of your time, money and effort there is no issue in asking questions before you proceed. Better now than later, either way.

not overly analytical! Very informative. I appreciate your post and the pics you put up. I think this taught me and a few others a little about head gaskets. It could even help others long down the road if they can figure out how to make the search function on this forum work...I'm not quite there yet myself.

What's wrong with the search function? I've used it many times with success.

A very sincere thanks and to let all know, I try to express all of my
ignorance as well as what I've learned. You comment is appreciated,
as I bear it all for everyone to see.

yes I have trouble with the search function and I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but when I try to bring up a subject I'm inundated with very recent posts that have nothing to do with... It could be that I'm not setting a filter correctly. I haven't tried to use it in a while.

PM me with specifics if you are having problems using the search function. I've had no complains and it's been working fine for years as far as I know.. I suspect operator error, but if you can tell me exactly what you think isn't working (some examples) perhaps I can help. Please PM me though with the info.
