TR2/3/3A TR3b brake caliper options

Hi guys - so the good news is the TR3b made her debut as real live transportation today with needing help from AAA.

The bad news is that I conformed that the passenger side front brake caliper is leaking. VickyBrit lists theses as gasp $329 as side.

Are there better sources or rebuild units I should be thinking about?

Buy the seals & rebuild it yourself. They are almost infinitely rebuildable, because the seal only rubs against the piston, which can also be replaced if necessary.

Not certain offhand which caliper you should have (changed in the middle of the TR3B run), but both early and late calipers take the same seal kit.

Let me know if you get stuck, I'm bound to have one in rebuildable condition lying around somewhere.

If you hustle, you can get in on TRF's sale that ends today, seal kit HK2501 (for both sides) is $30; while stainless steel pistons HP126/E (originals were chromed steel) are $20.

Girling said not to split the caliper halves, but many people do and it seems to work out OK. If you will be splitting them, note that there is an O-ring in there that is not included in the rebuild kit. I think TRF sells them, but don't know the part number offhand.

TRF sells the o-ring. BP Northwest does also, for less money.
If you do split the calipers(which I think is the best way to hone and clean any rubbish out of the hydraulic system. Make sure you pop the pistons as far out as you can, before splitting the caliper When reassembing the caliper, I recmmend blue/ or red loctite on the caliper bolts and torque to 47 lb/ft of torque.(If the figure changed for the 3, vs 6 calipers(my familiarity) I'm sure someone will chime in.

I am very pleased with the rebuilt set I purchased from Apple Hydraulics for about $100 each with exchange. Or he can rebuild your units for the same price.

Thanks guys - great info. After talking with Apple I think I'm going to go that route due to all the other projects I've managed to stack up.
