Supporting car w/o suspension?

I have determined that it is porbably wise to install the engine, tranny, and diff before I proceed with replacement of sheet metal parts. My question is can I place jack stands under the front shock supports and under the rear spring, after reinstalling them, and achieve the same result as a car on its suspension? I would rather not reinstall the front suspension at this time. Thanks for your help.

would not the factory have had a rolling chassis and then installed mechanicals and then panels?

Yes Zblu ,that is my understanding. However, a rolling chassis is interpreted to include the front suspension being inplace prior to assemby of the rest of the car.---Keoke

Keoke,
The reason for not installing the suspension is the car is not primed yet. I was waiting to install all the new sheetmetal before I primed the car. Any thoughts and thanks for the response.

I don't know John,I do all the sheetmetal fitting on the car then I remove them and prime and paint them individually. Hang em where ever I can find a space then build a rolling chassis.---Fwiw---Keoke?

gents,it is my understanding that the rolling chassis including the susp.,body panels including paint, were then sent off to a seperate facility for the engine and trans. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Keoke,
I agree with painting everything separately. When I did my MGTF I had 140 parts hung from the shop ceiling. I could install the front suspension and then remove for painting, I was just trying to find a suitable alternate. I am planing to install the rear springs and diff for support and weight. I did clean out the main frame rails and they were fairly clean and the inside metal looks remarkably good (5 small external top side areas to replace) for what I could see. Thanks for your help and have a good day!

Keoke,
The sheet metal work I am talking about is the pieces that I have to weld in, all the flooring, sills, rockers etc. For this I gather it is better to have the frame weighted with the drive train and I did not want to install the front suspension yet. Thanks again.
