SU observations from a noob

I already swapped the Weber back on. At one point I checked for clearance there and had it, but just now I looked close and it seems it could have been hanging up there again, which would certainly explain why the idle wouldn't come back down! Now I'm tempting to put them back on!
I couldn't get low idle even with the throttle linkage loose though so I don't know if I can blame that entirely. Thanks for pointing that out though, I need to watch that I not only set that clearance but MAINTAIN it after continued mess'n.
Should I expect to be able to eliminate all daylight around the throttle disks?
I'm really interested to know what happens when the throttle screws are fully backed out under normal circumstances. I'd guess it would stall if the disks are sealing well?
 
It would stall.

Yep there should be no daylight at all.
 
Okay, redid throttle disks, got better fitment, ditched the o-rings as I thought they might be causing the butterfly to be offset a tad. Reinstalled, can idle right down to 800, maybe lower, didn't try. Tuned it there, got good balance, spent about 20 seconds on mixture and off to a car show. Ran fine. Better then the Weber in many respects. Maybe I don't need new shafts after all? Who knows. I'll continue to tinker and futz.

I think you just might have it now. Good stuff.
 
My only fear now is I didn't expect to keep them on so I just used some medium locktite on the throttle disk screws, didn't bend them out. Probably should pull them again and bend those out, hate to suck a screw into the intake and destroy the motor, that would ruin a nice day. Had that happen once on a '63 Corvair with turbo, ruined the impeller on the turbo but otherwise soldered on.
 
Yup. spread the screws ever so slightly. As Jack says, there should be NO light past the plates when fully 'home'. And backing the throttle screws out should stall the thing. The beast should be able to just 'tick over' at as low as 500 RPM. I usually aim for 750~800 as a compromise to traffic driving.
 
Was able to get the screws spread open through the bore, air cleaners off of course, damper chamber and pistons removed. Glad I didn't have to pull the carbs and break them down again. Drilled a hole in forward air cleaner housing to add fitting for rocker cover vent. All buttoned up and ready to roll. I'll have to continue adjustments, especially mixture but as is she runs well and pulls pretty hard so I'm stoked. If all goes well I'll put the Weber conversion kit on ebay soon, unless someone here want it.
