I have done it, SU conversin on a 1500. And while i am still trying to get my needles where i want them, the difference between a weber and the twin su's is no contest. The su's are Mucho better

Weren't me. We poured some automotive paint into one on Da's workbench to clean the gun. When we looked back around there was nothin' but a little puddle of red paint left onna bench. That pretty much explained it to us. A bit later I watched a neighbor pour some gas in one to dump into a mower he'd run dry... I suggested he use a Mason jar but he was always a know-it-all. Ok gang, I did a good bit of troubleshooting. starting at the hose that connects the carb to the mechanical fuel pump, I started the car and pumped the pedal a few times and no gas. Went and conencted a hose to fuel pump which feeds carb and no gas. Checked line for clogs..gas comes through when i removed line and hoses and flushed with air and gas. Took off feeder line to fuel pump (whch is only 2 months old) and did the same ..no gas. Disconencted fuel line from gas tank by unscrewing the line. Gas came running out. Had a bucket !! Put the onyl air I had which is a small electric pump to pump air into rafts. Gas came out of line into a jar and felt air coming through. Put air line to pump on line from tank (feeder) line and air came out other side. I am wondering if the fuel pump is messed up already? She's only two months old. What makes the fuel pump diaphragm operate? Is it suction from the block when the block starts pumping? at this point it seems like a bad fuel pump????

Certainly sounds like the pump! Is there a fuel filter in line there somewhere? If so, don't even bother checking it, just replace it (they are cheap enough!)it may be clogged. If that fails, THEN a new pump may be in order!

Just read your thread about oil in the carb! I agree with Tony, you have a Zenith carb on that which is quite different from the SUs most of us are familiar with, though according to my manual it also gets oil in the dashpot. I have a section in my manuals for the Zenith, but not having worked on one it seems much more complex than an SU! I would guess that something may be out of adjustment with that carb, but will defer to someone who may be more familiar with them!
 
would the carb prevent gas from coming out the other side of the fuel pump?
 
So have you tested the fuel pump?

You can test the Pump by removing the hose off the carb and pulling the coil wire so the engine dont start. the turn the engine over if the Pump is working the Gas will squirt out about ever other turn on the fuel pump.
 
coil wire? Sorry, I am a car idiot...I tried googling it..
 
Lou, it's the wire that runs from the center of the coil to the center of the distributor cap. It looks like another spark plug wire.

Pumping the accelerator pedal in an MG does nothing - the carb does not have an accelerator pump...you've got to tur on the ignition & listen to the fuel pump "tick" until its stops - that's when the fuel system is pressurized & the fuel bowls completely full.

What type pump? SU or aftermarket? If SU, have you got the hoses hooked up correctly? there's an 'in' & an 'out'!

NO!

Before we go any further, what type fuel pump do you have? Where did you buy it? Let's determine what we're working ith before we try to diagnose its problems.

he has a 79. which would not have a ticking fuel pump. the 1500 has a mechanical pump mounted on the block and driven off the camshaft.

Is it possible BlackJokr has the wrong length fuel pump arm for his application? My car had a generic electric pump when I got it, so I am no expert, but as I understand there are two styles of pump for the 1500: one with a long lever arm and one with a short. I know the long arm pump can be used in a short application with a spacer. Maybe BlackJokr had a long arm pump, but replaced it with a short arm pump and the spacer is not allowing the lever to engage the cam properly. Maybe someone with more experience can comment on this wacky idea.
 
Its from Moss. I am calling them today. I mena it ran for about a month on this fuel pump so I knwo it works. Its definitely a mechanical pump and is hooked up the right direction. Its even marked for gas flow.

Only thing I can add is to check the fuel lines all the way up to the fuel pump. Mine had a hose split between the pipe running along the frame and the pipe going over the transmission bellhousing.

One easy check to see if the pump is getting any fuel at all is take the single bolt off the top, and remove the cover. There's a screen in there to act as a crude fuel filter, and if there's no gas under it, then suspect the pump or a blocked/leaky fuel line. If you wanted to rule out the mismatched pump levers, you could also unbolt the pump and pump it by hand to see if it moves anything.
 
Sorry BJ, guess you posted while I was typing. Check the hoses in the fuel line then, mine ran for a while and mysteriously died when the hose split.
 
Pump a little air all the way back from the tank and gas be a runnin'! lol..but I will check again... Thanks guys!!
 
I got the fuel pump marked #12 in the pic. Not sure if we used the spacer or not. Guess I should check!
