Progress-new thread Monday

It sounds like you are truly "on the road again" to quote Willie Nelson!! You cannot ask for better weather today to go out and enjoy your time with Miss Agatha!!

Nasty nasty here today, solid rain since last evening. Hard rain but the next ten days look like driveing weather to me.

Guess I will take a day off and just chill a bit.

I forgot you are way up there in the NW part of the state Jack! That front is splittig the state in two! Too bad you aren't down here!!! The weather is beeyouteeful BE weather here (wish mine was on the road right now!!).

Weather guys say that this afternoon will see some sun here but roads will still be wet of course. Next 10 days look great.

Just ordered the crankcase breather for the fuel pump hole from Mini Mania. Hope it works as advertised. Crank case pressure not good.

Yep , I did not say PCV. The hose over the side or from a side engine cover to a carb is a positive crank case ventilation system. But there has to be somthing and it must vent the pressure built up in the crakcase---Keoke

That will give me three vents Keoke, one top, one middle and one bottom. About all I can do with a vent system.

Well Jack, when the rings get bedded in the residual level of crank case pressure will probably be within the existing vent system's ability to cope with it.---Keoke

Isn't it strange how I manage to come up with these off the wall problems.

Latest in this series.

Low oil pressure, pull the engine and install a new pump. Also change out the clutch set for all new.

Still no oil pressure and the clutch set was wrong.

Pull the engine, new bearings, rehone cylinders, new different clutch set.

Oil pressure great. Clutch fine but needs longer rod. Engine leaks like a sive at the rear end.

Pull engine, redo tranny rear seal.

Still leakes like a sive.

Pull engine and redo the scroll seal.

Leaks but now from rear of oil pan.

Pull pan and reseal.

Stoped that one.

Still leaks from the rear seal. Not sure I would call it a leak or blow by. Plugs for #s 1, 2,and 4 look like they are seating. #3 is black and oily. Only about 10 miles so far on engine.

So of course a long run is in order tomorrow.

Also ordered from MM a bottom end ventilation thing for the fuel pump hole hopefully to take what pressure there is off of the rear seal. Might not need it if rings seat OK. Who knows.

It has been quite a ride guys and I surely appreciate your holding my hand.

Congratulations on how far you have gone! Miss Agatha is becoming a true lady and you should be proud of her!
That fuel pump vent won't hurt any but I doubt that it will do much either, the Sprite 948 never came with any PCV except for the road-tube and the rockercover vent and didn't need anything more, any pressure in the crankcase can easily flow up along the oil-drain holes by the pushrods. Once you seat the rings you will be good-to-go!

And what exactly does the term "PCV" stand for?----------- As I used it here in this context and per Wikipeda's definition PCV = Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve.
Jeff

Not to jump into your semantics game guys, but I would say that a PCV is a Pollution Control Valve, but if FOLLOWED by the word "valve" would refer to a Positive Crank-case Ventilation "valve" otherwise the "V" would be redundant!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Ran up to Chatchtaw Beach and back this morning, status follows.

Runs well at 60, 45 lbs of oil pressure hot with 20 at idle.

Had a float valve stick, hmmm.

Had a pin hole leak show up at the radiator inlet connection, a bit of JBWeld is on the agenda.

Rings have seated in, plugs all nice tan white and exhaust is showing tanish as well.

Still leaks like a sive, have not been under it yet. Think maybe a diper is in order. Used best I can tell about a quarter of a quart of oil in about 20 miles, er leaked it.

More inspection to follow.

Been under Miss Agatha now. Oil from between the bottom of the engine back plate and the bell housing and the drip hole as well.

I think there is nothing more I can do till I get the fuel pump hole breather from MM. It has been shiped.

If that does not cure the prob, and I am not sure it will it's engine out time again. Can not think what I would find or do but something, heck anything.

Dang!! Well Jack lets hope the new part will help, However, we might postulate that while the rings appear to have bedded in thy may just be bedding in. It is possible that who ever cross hatched the bore was just a bit too aggressive and it will take a longer bit of spirited driving to insure that the rings make optimum contact with the bores when running on the oil film between the two. I hope so.---Fwiw-Keoke

Yep, agree. Will take another ride in the morning. Another 20 miles or so.

At least they seem to be working in.

I have an idea, how about a new engine.

Naaa, what would I do with this one, it's so preaty.

Make a coffe-table out of it!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif
