Progress-new thread Monday

Yep above the scroll was dry, did all the above Phil.

Pan, back of engine and clutch back in now.

Very interesting! I seem to have a similar problem, but I thought it was coming from the tranny. I was hoping that the motor just needed to be seated. Especially since I haven't ran it a bunch. When I originally built the motor it did not leak. I drained the tranny and refilled. I figured that things were leaking because of a possible overfill of the tranny. It was coming out of areas that Jack has described. The car sat for about two months without running. When I was getting it ready for the body guy, I noticed quite a bit of oil coming from different points under the tranny and from the rear of the motor. I have to replace the motor mounts, I wonder if I should go ahead and pull the motor to check it all out? Should I, or should I wait to see if it is just break in???
THoughts??? Jack????

Engine back in but for drive shaft and radiator. Weeee, some day.

Tell ya what I think, if this dosn't do it I drive Miss Agatha into the ocean. Engine in and out three times in a couple of weeks.

Yep, Boz think I would check it all out when I pull the engine for new engine and tranny mounts. Would also reseal the front plate on the tranny, might as well do the whole bit while in there.

Boy o Boy Jack are we in a race?

So the only thing you found was gasket was broken and lack of gasket sealer on the top scoll plate.?

Mark

Top scroll is easy to remove with the crank in, the bolts are not that long.

I broke the gasket it was very brittle. But you could see where there was no sealer and the oil was leaking by it. I hope.

Race, I think not. I just want to see if it is fixed this time and the only way is to test.

To darn cold today, is 48 in the garage. Old bones do not take kindly to that.

Supose to get up to 61 so just may have a bit of time to finish up and make a test.

Can't blame you Jack. 35 outside up here--Burrrr!! Let us know your progress today. Do you think it is possible to see a leak from the front of the transmission without pulling it out? How about looking through the driver side plug?

GOT IT. RAN IT FOR ABOUT A MIN OR SO, NO LEAKS.

Noop, think the way would be to put some dye in the tranny.

Thanks to all those that helped and Hap specificely for the detailed instructions.

Removed the upper scroll plate. Cleaned all very good, used a new gasket with RTV both sides and a bit as well where the upper scroll plate mates to the rear scroll plate which is part of the rear main bearing. Used lock tight on the three bolts. Was no prob removeing or reassembleing.

Almost up to 60 Jeff, quick tune up and I am going to take a ride today even.

Congrats Jack. Progress ever onward. Now after all of this work, you just might own the only LBC that does not leave a trail everywhere it goes. Bugsy leaves 5 telltale drops every time he parks. Miss Agatha will be a dainty gal that never leaces a mess behind.

Darn!! & I was heading down with a diver to pull her out of the bay!!

Third time the charm, now if I can just get these carbs adjusted properly.

Did take about a one mile ride though, scans bonnet.

WOOHOO!!

Nice work, Jack. Glad to hear Ms Agatha won't be going for a swim anytime soon. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Thats great!!! Congrats Jack!!!

Just verifies what my granddad used to say, "Boy, when you open that engine - replace everything, even if you did it only a short while ago,"

I'm telling you - every lesson for life that I needed to learn, I did in the front seat of his old '48 Ford pickup as he was out & about buying crop futures or in his barn while he was under a tractor!

Went for a two mile drive. Still al bit of a leak, not running like it was but not going to pull it again for awile.

Guess that is the place, the scroll seal but don't know how to stop it at this point.

Hi Jack, Most of the LBC's suffer from failure of the Rear Main Labyrinth seal. For these cases an external seal has been produced and made available through a number of vendors. You might ask Tony if such a kit is available for your engine as I am not familiar with it.--Fwiw--Keoke
