Progress-new thread Monday

Yep - that cover's gotta come off...remember, the trans was rebuilt & then sat on the shelf for some time.

I wonder, I just wonder how many other LBCs out there have leakes around that cover plate as I would bet they have been on there for 40 years more or less. Some fresh modern sealent would be very good preventive maintance when the engine is out next.

I never realised that the clutch pivot point is on that plate. Not sure I would have designed it that way, however has kind of stood the test of time.

Do our little cars mark their spot from the engine seal or the tranny seal or both?

Oh well, at least the prob has been found and it is something I can fix and we all learned something I hope.

Thanks for all the help guys, the chance to think out loud with you all listening and chimeing in is priceless. Just think of the fun we all could of had in my garage for a few hours pokeing and proding and poping a cap or two.

Soon as I looked at that pic, Jack, I could see that the leak was coming from the front cover-plate gasket...easy fix, another re-install and then..Whoo-hoo!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/driving.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

Front plate off, all cleaned well and back on with a new modern sealent. Looked to me that was the leak as the orginal sealent had degraded. No gasket in there so used form a gasket and a bit squeezed out all around.

Here's to hoping you found the issue. I'll make sure I look that area over closely when I work on my engine install in a few months.

Engine and tranny hanging on hoist. I just ran out of steam at the moment. Got to take a break.

God I hope this is the end of this in and out stuff.

Engine in, Motor and tranny bolted up. Those bottem tranny bolts got to be the most difficult on the car.

Pretty soon he'd going to install some quick-releases on his bonnet hinges. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Good work, Jack. Hope we get a positive Vroom-Vroom soon.

Drew:
I am thinking a big Amce spring under the oil pan with a release lever.

Jack:
Just kidding it took me along time to learn what an input shaft bushing was and that was the hard way.

Great work, I will keep my fingers crossed for you.
Pat

I need that spring to put it back.

Carbs, starter, and driveshaft to go.

Need for the sealent to set overnite in any case.

All done but the drive shaft and the radiator now.

Wow, what a day. That's real work. Just glad to get it done, I hope before the bad weather arrives for thanksgiving. Might even get a bit of a drive tomorrow if all works out.

Who wants to bet on the resolution of all my problems, oil pressure, clutch, and oil leak, hopefully from the tranny front plate caused by the excessive pressure from the mismatched clutch kit. The clutch arm is slung from that plate, lots of pressure with the wrong one. Wouldn't you know that was the only joint in the tranny I had not renewed. Was a factory gold unit but no telling how long it had sat in some old warehouse drying out.

Well, it's tomorrow already Jack! Didja drive her yet? Huh, Didja, didja? What's the word? We're all waitin'!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Haha, just jacked up the rear to install the drive shaft, give me an hour or so.

Ok, it's been an hour & 20 minutes...

How's it going?

And I still got an oil leak. Engine is going to have to come out again but am going to think a few days first.

Man does it come out of there. Think maybe I will drain the tranny first and try again as fast as this comes 30 sec will tell me if it is from there.

Otherwise, don't see how but it must be the rear scroll seal.

A suggestion, head for one of your parts stores and get some of the "purple oil" to put in the trans, or engine, to isolate which component is leaking.

Union 76 used to sell Royal Purple oil back in the 60's. Dunno if they still do. Know a lot of parts houses sell an oil that is in a clear container that is purple.

That way you can isolate which component is leaking. The dye that you were going to purchase and install is a really good idea as it will help pinpoint the source. Dye kits can be purchased relatively inexpensively.

Shucks I am just going to run it a bit and see if the oil level in the engine goes down. Am just about convenced it is the scroll seal plate, the half moon thing. Can it be removed and sealed without removeing the pan and crank do you supose. This thing leakes like a water valve is on some I mean a steady stream. Think the engine oil level has gone down as well. We will see.

Jack - Didn't you post a photo of the trans where it appears to be leaking from the front cover?

Ah, found it - there's just so many threads about this problem...sure would be nice if possible to combine them all in 1 thread!
