Luckily, NC exempts cars once they are over 35 years old. No grease monkey touching my midget. Most have no idea about the car, can't even change the gears, work the pedals or put them up on a rack without damage.

I took it to Boffo motors in new Brighton. Anybody that recognizes that name could tell you that the "grease monkey" experience that Kimm described above would never happen there. Jim boffo used to have an Austin, mg, british leyland dealership in the same location.

What does the inspection in PA consist of? When I was a kid (Philadelphia) they checked the lights, took off one wheel and checked the brake linings, and that was pretty much it. Had to do the ritual twice a year.
Here in CA, we have only emissions inspection, and that applies only to 1976 and later cars.

I just think I wanted to make the point that some people are working very hard to be environmentally conscious, trying to get people to understand that we can not keep just blowing all the exhaust gas and pollutants into the atmosphere without regard. I don't want to use derogatory language so I only give reference to what other people are doing. Statements like

The Pennsylvania inspection process ~IS~ about safety and emissions. He took it to a place where the work is VERY diligently performed.
As for MS inspection, I've no direct experience but it would seem to me the shops doing the inspection would be less-than motivated to do the work for whatever part of five bucks they get...
but that falls under the issue of "States' Rights" as well.
"...without regard"? That's not happening any longer. There's where F.I. and fuel management on autos, "scrubbers" on industrial chimneys, water processing on effluent outlets, etc. have already come to exist.
And sayin' much about what that link to COP15 does to buck up the example of the hard work some people are doing and what it aims at accomplishing will put this thread straight into the bin.

My NYS inspection consisted of me driving my car into the bay, showing the mechanic the lift points, Doing my own under body inspection as I answer his questions about the car.
We brought it down and lifted the hood. Then everyone in the shop came over for a peak. When I latched the hood, the inspection was over. He asked me if everything looked good, I said YEP!

In VA if you purchase antique vehicle tags your car is exempt from state inspections. Good thing. This resulted from from some diligent lobbying and hard work in the state capitol by car enthusiasts, antique car clubs and car-friendly state legislators. A lot of folks were involved.
One of the legislators who helped pass the legislation owns and drives a beautifully restored Triumph TR3. He's retired now but attends many of the local LBC shows, and wins lots of awards.
He helped with the legislative effort because he knows that antique cars are <span style="text-decoration: underline">not</span> a significant part of the pollution/safety problem on our highways. Antique car enthusiasts tend to take very good care of their engines, which of course minimizes pollution.
Virginians who love their antique cars got the state inspection exemption the old-fashioned way: <span style="font-style: italic">we earned it</span>.

Things like Fiats, with their obtuse emissions controls rotted off and laying alongside the highway years prior....
Anyway, the WA morons took their cue from the California Head Morons at CARB.....who had decided that "old cars produced emissions, new cars did not", and had credits for mass polluters if they would buy (and scrap) "old" cars....
So, California set up this big roadside media event.
Portable emissions testing equipment, and CHP.....
Pulled over a mom in her environmentally-current soccer-mom-coach.......all the media cameras going....and it failed.
Ooops.
Next car, Yuppie in his new, low emissions small car......failed.
About this time, the bureaucrats are getting edgy....
So, they see this 1973 Cadillac coming down the road.
Ah-HA!
Pulled him over.
Passed.
That caused a major re-think in emissions....our state went from testing 1968 and newer to a sliding scale of 25 years old and newer.
Older cars tend to be BETTER maintained than new ones.
Now, an ancilliary to the story:
As a Washington State Emissions Specialist, we got invited to events just for said specialists.
Had an evening meet at a testing facility.
"Bring your own car, we will hook it up and show you how the entire process works".
So, I took my 1950 Ford Tudor with a Flathead V-8.
Them freaking morons were rolling on the floor laughing.
"It will never pass!"
Shut them up.....and I still have the copy of the test results in the glove box.....marked "pass".
I remember when the "official" mentality was diesels did not pollute......
Finally, they started looking at "particulate" matter, and "oops!".
