Actually, after so many years the surfaces may not be exactly prime, so a little insurance never hurts. Especially if it's a thin film. (At least in my book.)
Can someone tell me where Chuck keeps the gasket sealer?
/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I spent an hour looking for that gooey blue stuff in the tube. I asked 5 neighbors and went up town. So the old pump is still sitting on the garage floor.
I figure if Chuck had sealer on the old gasket, I'm putting it on the new one.
They DID use rust proofing, Paul...our DPO's just didn't take care of their cars like we do....I've a '79 that has NO rust & I'm the original owner who does maintenance - keeps it clean....
it makes life so much easier, and drier.....plus has numerous other non sealing uses....I am not a DPO, but I have used RTV in a few questionable situations:
Dash crack temporary repair
Vinyl top repair(tiny hole)
reinstalation of OEM engine compartment decals
Weather stripping repair
truck leak repair
rust prevention
cowl leak repair
theres probably more but I can't remember them all....most of those where on my old Jeep

If they didn't use sealant in the factory, why should we later on?

Probably because they either wanted to save a nickel or not slow down the line. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
I'll bet that Abingdon didn't use antisieze paste on the thermostat or head studs either. I've wrestled my share of those in the past and pretty much use it everywhere steel meets water. Or aluminum.
I guess I could be called a practical purist. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Found the gasket sealer at 6am today. Flushing the radiator and putting things back together tonight.

Me too. Except my rad had about 4 coats of paint on it, so I'm having it hottanked/flushed/pressure checked at the local shop. Should have it back tonight. Photos at 11.
