MGB Need to replace a sending unit

My MGB was overheating, or so I thought. Since the gauge went to H so quickly, I assumed it was a stuck thermostat. As it turns out it didn't have a thermostat, so now it does. So I am going to need a coolant temperature sending unit which from what I understand is not very expensive, but I have no clue where to buy one. Any ideas as to where to find one without spending more on S&H than the part costs?

Have you tried NAPA? <hint-hint>

That was very kind of you to look it up for me. Thanks

I called them and they said it is a $10.00 minimum order requirement, plus about $6.00 in S&H.

I guess that is why the mechanic did not order it and suggested I try to get it locally. When I called NAPA they said they did not have it.

I ordered one from Gordon @ www.thebhive.com last year. I am almost positive he has no problems with a small order.
P/N 350-125 $6.76 .. Shipping cost is however about 7.50-still we are talking less than a ten dollar bill.

Do these suckers not work and then suddenly start working consistently? Mine would show it was overheating even when the engine was not running. However now it has been working well. So unless it got wind of me getting ready to change it, I am at a loss to figure it out. Anyone else's do this to them?

Could be just corrosion in one of the connections.

Indeed

Being in S Florida it is moist outside, so things can get twitchy. Then again this is a British car, so you'd think they would have anticipated wet conditions. ;)

It is still working, knowing it is under constant threat of being replaced the next time I need a few parts.

The cars are aware. Any malfunctioning bit will instantly go back to working as soon as you have a replacement part on order. :jester:

I have no solid contacts down in your direction other than Alfa ones, but that sender should be listed in NAPA's books. I think you've got ahold of a lazy or untrained/inexperienced counter-weasel.

Make sure you have a stable voltage indication. If the alternator is sporadic in it's voltage output, it can effect other electrical components in the car. Can't remember if the voltage stabilizer has any effect on the temp gauge. PJ

What ever you do, don't be temped to put teflon tape on it. These things work on a ground resistance and the tape can wreck your chances of getting a correct reading.

A mistake made more than not! Use a liquid sealer. PJ
