T-Series MGA Turn Signal Switch

I'm sneaking over here from the Triumph forum because I have a question about the turn signal switch from an MGA. I have a TR3 that I installed a rack and pinion steering in and am contemplating devising a slip ring to work with the original trafficator, or just going with an MGA unit.

What I'd like to know is what are the diameters of the stem that goes through the dash...is it "D" shaped, and if so, can the handle be positioned in any way I want, and what is the diameter of the main barrel of the switch that would be behind the dash??

An MGA switch requires a 3/4 inch hole which has a 'double D' configuration - that is there are 2 flats within the hole. The distance between the flats is about 9/16 of an inch wide. The overall diameter of the switch is 2-3/16 inches. The overall length behind the threaded mount is about 2-5/8 inches long.

The lever of the switch is mounted perpendicular to the flats of the 'double D'-hole, for instance on the MGA, the flats are horizontal and the lever is vertical. The shaft that comes out of the switch is hexagonal in shape so you are limited to how many positions the switch can be placed.

You may want to consider mounting it vertically under the dash. This is how it is done in later model MGTD's. However, the switch takes up a lot of space behind the panel so you are limited to what you can do with it.

These alternative switches can either have lighted switch lever or not, and the option of being either a rotary switch or a lever type switch, they are much smaller than the lucas type switch - but they are not self-canceling.
