Making Progress

Although the holes were rather small, I had to count (and fill) them all....34 in total....I think that I am getting fairly close to getting some POR15 applied to the interior of the tub at least.

Took the body off again tonight as I think that I am going to concentrate on getting the engine fired up. I have never heard it run(wasn't running when I bought her)and I don't think that it has run in about 7 years....should be interesting! I think that I need to gather up a few of my local triumph guys for the occasion.

Anyway, a few photos as usual...although kinda boring....

Looks like good solid metal your working with.
 
Not bad in certain areas Keith...I have seen much worse. I am still amazed at how much metal I have taken off the car and replaced though....

I think that the only welding I have to do left is the rear close out panel, battery box, left and right dogleg bottoms and a few fender plugs..I am sure more stuff will pop up though when I start playing around with the panels again.

On the late TR3A (TS 81551 L) that I restored, I had to get "new" front and rear fenders plus the LHS door because of the accident that had occured before it sat for 3 winters and summers in a garden under a tarpaulin.

The "new" rear fender looked good when I got it, but after taking out the "Bondo" along a 4 foot long scrape almost the fill length, some DPO had drlled 56 small holes about 3/16" diameter along the scrape and along each side of it. Then he had taken a tapered pin and hammered this tapered pin into every hole to flare the hole inwards so the Bondo wouldn't fall out.

I removed it all and plug welded all these holes closed with my MIG welder and then ground off the excess and sanded it flush - as it should have been done in the first place.

The fender came out perfect.

Put the carbs on, fuel pump, oil filter, dizzy today...looks like the Test Start day is planning for December 27th so I am looking forward to that. Going to look after the cooling system tomorrow and work on getting the oil/temp/tach guages hooked up in some sort of rig. Need to play around with the exhaust a little bit so as not to scare the neighbours!

Will take some video of the occasion that I hope will be successful!

Some wisdom (for what it's worth) from NorCal:

I just slipped on one muffler and that was sufficient for a start in my garage. Make sure you route your wiring so you can't short out to the block or get temporary wires caught in moving parts. I fed my fuel pump from a plastic fuel can on the ground with a suction stub - keep fuel away from car - it is so dangerous. You'll probably need help for start as you'll be working the carbs (choke and fast idle) and having second set of hands on the ignition/starter. Make sure your hoses are all good and tight. I took a huge antifreeze shower when the hose on discharge side of water pump came loose. What a stinking mess. Maybe start with water rather than antifreeze. If you can spin engine with no plugs and get oil pressure pumped up before starting, that will be a good idea. Static timing was fine to dial in timing to get engine started. Then I used a light to set timing at idle. Ensure oil line to the gauge is tight - mine leaked on the floor. Maybe squirt some oil on the rockers before start up. That's all I can think of for now.

David, how do you keep track of all of the projects?? I have trouble with two cars that are "almost" nearly done. You have several that are in various states of dis-assembly. I admire the efforts and the work that you are doing to each one, plus what you've done to the TR6.

Hi Paul! Yeah, but in my defense the Alfa was apart when I got her and is now going back together. Brave | stupid. Fine line there...

Bit of an update this evening. Spent a solid 8 hours on the car over the weekend. Decided to media blast the interior of the tub to clean it up as best as I could prior to putting down some POR15. A dirty job in a closed up garage but I like the end result. Some pics of the rear of the tub as I am not finished the front yet.

So started with this and had been working at it with wire brushes, grinder, strippers off and on when I got bored with other projects.
