BJ8 plus 55mph Front end shaking

- Hello , the rims seem worn, this is certainly due to previous use without being properly tightened.

- I am looking for new MWS wire wheels 5 1/2" x 15" (XW45C/2-TL)

May be a coincidence but on finding I had too much toe in I swapped front for rear wheels and adjusted toe in to between zero & 1/16 and bingo the shakes have drastically improved. I have a therory that one explanation is rear brake drums are partly to blame and are so close to the centre a slightly out of balance wheel/tyre will increase this imbalance and it may be improved by trying different positions on the splined hub this is obviously a rather tiresome (excuse the pun) exercise but I have marked mine now it is running sweet. Be interesting to see the difference when I rotate wheels again.
 
Good show total resolution may also require balancing the rear brake drums.
 
Yes good suggestion I did replace my drums last year and was assured by the UK supplier they were balanced ??? Having trouble finding a local firm who could check them. Was thinking of experimenting with my old drums on a wheel balancer, the welder and a drill bit !
 
I suggest you add weight with epoxy before you go welding and drilling. Epoxied weights may actually last longer than us.

Will you get your rear drums balanced ? I would like to get mine done but cannot find anyone locally who could do it.
 
I suggest you add weight with epoxy before you go welding and drilling. Epoxied weights may actually last longer than us.
Hendrix Wire Wheel uses an adhesive to attach the balance weights to the drums (epoxy?) but also puts in a couple "chicken fasteners" for insurance.
 
Chicken fasteners are similar to hog rings--however they are used on poultry rather than upholstery.

When aircraft started being made out of non-metallic materials (carbon fiber, etc.) and adhesives, just to be sure they wouldn't come apart traditional metal fasteners also were used in some places --- "chicken" fasteners.
 
Google showed staples. Wondering how Hendrix uses these to attach weights to brake drums.

Yes, you get a picture of a staple (for chicken wire) when you Google "chicken fastener". But also the first hit is a link to the chicken fasteners I was referring to. Hendrix drilled and tapped my drums to install typical countersunk screws as "chicken fasteners" for the glued-on balance weights.
 
When we had my BJ8's drums balanced the machinist bent steel--5/16" dia I think--rods and welded them between the ribs on the drums. The same people balanced the driveshaft by welding some steel plate onto the shaft.
