Austin Healey Script on Boot Lid

OK, how in the world do you get the fixing nut on the uppermost securing pin on the Austin Healey Script on the boot? My guess is there are a lot of restored cars out there with two fixing nuts and not three!

Yep Lin, You are absolutely correct mine included. Besides they will require replacement over time and the two will hold it just fine.

Hi Lin,

I made a little tool .. just scrap piece of aluminum with a slight bend at one end and a U cutout slightly smaller than the clip. I used a few small drops of super glue to hold the clip to the tool. This made it pretty easy to get the clip started and most of the way on. Then used a screw driver to slide it on the rest of the way. I bet they had some trick little custom tool at the factory to do it in one go.

Cheers,
John

Well Guys, I guess you could make a tool to put it on. However, IMOP it isn't worth the effort, since removing it is more trouble and potentially damaging to the interior paint than putting it on. Removal of the Script will be required periodically to clean all the trapped dust and dirt underneath it out and allow a good waxing with the rest of the Boot lid. Just my opinion here.---Keoke

Wow Keoke,

You are more persnickety than I thought! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif The trouble with removing badges for waxing/cleaning etc. is the increased potential for breakage and damaging the paint (as you point out). I guess if removing them is in your plans then going with nuts like Randy suggests is a better option since the original clips are really designed for installation, not removal. JMHO as usual!

Cheers,
John

Well you didn't ask me how I had mine attached. So; I have some small stainless steel bevel washers which are neoprene faced pressed on the "Two Studs". Adjusting the tightness of the Script is accomplished by "Two" small acorn nuts.---- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif

Bein as I be so persnickety the rubber faced washers do not scratch paint, bloc water and if a polishing cloth thread gets caught under the Script which it will allows one to easily extract it. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif------Keoke-

Lin,
I am certain we'll hear from someone about this, but I drilled an access hole in the support piece of the boot right over the " hard to get at " location. After that, it is no trouble fastening down the script. With only two fastened down, the unfastened edge turns up a little and then you'll snag your washing or waxing cloth on the edge. This doesn't happen as easy with all three firmly attached.

Lin...all jest in fun...this is the only way most of us ole' ferts around here get a cardio workout anyway!!!

BTW: I actually paid money for those silly little plastic thingypoo's to put my Jag badge script on the back lid and all they did while I was trying to put em on was bend and in one case broke the prongs...

My BN2 doesn't have a brace in the way. The braces go from top outboard to bottom center. I "could" easily remove the script for weekly cleaning, if so inclined. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Depending on how close to the edge the pin is, one (me) might consider grinding the lip a small bit. Of course, it should be painted afterwards.

I also put a small round rubber washer under the spring clip to keep the water out.

Roger, I think your badge holes have been redrilled from the original location. On my car (and apparently Lin's and Keoke's) the upper right script mounting hole (as viewed from the the rear of the boot) is well behind the support brace. Here's a picture of mine.

Yes that is possible John, I have seen several cars including one of mine where the badge holes have been misplaced.--Keoke
