Anyone every built their own kitchen (from that flat box) store

I did two kitchens over the years getting the cabinets from HD. Both experiences were great. Ordered the ones I wanted and they delivered on time and with no errors. Cabinets were American Woodmark brand. One was a rental unit and HD called ahead so we would be there to receive them as we did not live there.

Last kitchen I did was Lowes in an apartment - we are quite happy though it was quite an adventure - the cabinets were on sale so we made it work (small kitchen) but probably had to go to six stores to get all we needed.

Not to press the issue, but ...

Wasn't the original question about " ... installing a kitchen from that big Swedish furniture store"?

I think it is safe to say that most conversations in this forum proceed like walking through a big Swedish Furniture Store. 😁

HD does have a great tool for holding the faces together so you can screw them.
Jerry could you post a picture of thisÉ Tryed to search it on the HD site and got 1500 results. :rolleyes2:

AMEN!!! This is my biggest complaint about Ikea kitchens. If I need to go back to get one item... I walk the maze. And when you think you've found a shortcut through the maze, the next time you are there the shortcut is closed. Massively annoying.

Fortunately for about $20 Ikea ships most small items. When I add up the cost of gas to get there (about 2 gallons) and the time, spending an extra $20 is worth it.

I don't have the tool, loaned it to a friend. But it is a clamp that pulls the face frame together with a port that allows you to drill a hole for the screw. I will try some searches also. found it!

you've probably seen some version of this when the founder died

We are quite fortunate - Ikea is literally a 7 minute drive away so while annoying it isn't that big a PITA to get small parts.

Returning things OTOH is where we got the idea of purgatory. :jester:

Had not seen that - but hysterical! (I forwarded to my wife; she will also get a kick out of it!)

And yes, returning is purgatory... my $ threshold for "should I spend my Saturday afternoon in purgatory, or just bin it?" is frighteningly high.

mine too! (I wonder if that is the plan)

Ikea on a Saturday is never a good idea but, one of my reserved orders was in and it seems like a lot of other parts were there as well (including apparantly the discontinued sink.) Found a lovely employee to get the orders sorted - the one in (which includes a base unit that I bought elsewhere but you can't edit out of the order - will return later) and the majority of the other reserved order and the stuff that the orginal (nice but slightly clueless) guy forgot to order.

Got it all listed and paid for - went to the pickup desk and asked that it be deliviered. Oh they say you need to go to the delivery desk at the back of the store - at which point I probably stood in line for 40 minutes waiting to be served with two people in front of me! You can't imagine a more labour intensive way to arrange delivery - recheck order/ manually receive address/ two computers - one for order one for payment - it goes on and then when I am there, and she is checking the boxes for each piece of the order every time she got half way down the page it automatically scrolled to the bottom. I muttered 'that must drive you nuts' - she looks at me and says 'yes! and this is the NEW software." Argghhh

But progress is progress

bookmarked.

Following up from last Saturday's post the stuff is supposed to be deliviered today (third try) - I am skeptical. I suspect they are missing a piece or two (sink - did I mention it has been discontinued?) So I will call. On the plus side I finally found my oscillating tool last night to start removing tile. This took some time and I can now say the garage is cleaner. 😁

time for an update. First off the order arrived yesterday as promised - amazing! Including the discontinued sink (never saw that coming) of course when we opened it it wasn't at all what we wanted (yes a farmhouse sink but stainless not porcelain.) In the meantime on Thursday we got the last 'reservation' in - meaning we had four days to get it. This was mostly doors and drawer faces - most of which we already had due to the big delivery yesterday. I just naturally assumed that when I was in the store last week that the lovely employee would have combined the two and cancelled the one, but, no.

So today went to the store. Returned $1200 worth of product that was wrong one way or another (for the record $110 was my mistake.) While Mrs JP was standing in the return line (purgatory) I went to pay for the reservation order - $1000. Finished the return, got the new order, put the $200 worth of stuff we actually needed into the car and walked right back to the returns line and returned $800 of what we just bought on account of they won't let you edit an order once it is made. BTW one door was damaged and they had the replacement in my hand in 10 minutes which was amazing!

Then we hopped in the car, drove 30 km to the next closest Ikea (actually 32 km, how do I know this you ask? because they will only deliver from that store in a 30km radius.) Bought $500 worth of stock there, 6 undercabinet lights that were out of stock at the Etobicoke store and 5 pieces of trim that are only carried in this one store!!!

But, it all fit in the car and so far as I can tell I have every piece I need for the actual Ikea part of the kitchen. This is perhaps the greatest Ikea miracle because we were assured it would be a year before we could get everything. So far I figure I am into this for about 7k. This doesn't include counter top, sink, tap, backsplash and range hood but does include a microwave. So, while it is unlikely I will get there for under 10k, I will be close which is half the quote.

Besides it's getting too cold to drive :D

Sounds like it's coming together nicely. Are you doing the install?

Yes we are - they say that you have to follow the directions to a T - and that contractors often struggle because they think they know how to do it - and regret it. Mrs JP and I have done almost all the work on all our homes - when we were first married we couldn't afford anything else. Then when we got a bit of money we realized we could have nicer things if we did it ourselves and now we are at the point where they might as well be our mistakes as someone else's. Plus you just can't even get trades to answer the phone these days. We will get our son to help and are taking a week off - everything is going where it was and there isn't a ton of prep so we should be OK. Famous last words - will keep you posted. :D
