I don’t know if the Midget Gods were shining on me or not, but Lady Dy and I managed to put in a new Windshield to cowl gasket with no problem and then install the Windshield …..done in only 3.5 hours, and no (well, a little) swearing. The key to putting in the gasket was to push in the T in the channel from the front of the Windshield, not the back. We cleaned it up good and put liquid detergent in the channel, and then fed it in 2 inches at a time and then using a putty knife, push the T into the channel from the front of the windshield. You start by pitting the windshield in a portable type vice table, gasket side up. Next, soap up the channel with 50/50 liquid detergent and water. Then brush on detergent for a 12 inch length or so on the T rubber of the gasket. Then start at the end of the windshield by sliding in 2 or 3 inches of the T into the back (inside windshield) of the channel and then using the putty knife push the front edge of the T into the front side of the windshield. Then, push it down another 2 or 3 inches and repeat. Keep this up till you come to the end. This took us about 20 minutes. Not bad for the first time ever! Trim the ends and you are done with this part.
Installing the completed Windshield was not too bad either. We first put 50/50 detergent mix on the cowl where the rubber gasket would meet the cowl. We then place the windshield in place. Next I tightened the 2 screws in the middle of the windshield about ½ way. Then, using a small rubber cake spatula (1 inch wide) and working from the inside of the windshield, we went under gasket and pushed the gasket out and made it lay down properly. (This was Lady Dy’s idea). After we did this I tightened the 2 middle screws down all the way. I then went to put on the big side bolts, which were a little too high. I then put a ¼ inch socket extension in the bottom screw hole and pried the pillar down enough to put in the top bolt. While holding he pillar down with the extension I then was able to screw in the top bolt. I think I would also be able to put in the top bolt if I had EGOR helping me and pushing down on the pillar, but I only had Lady Dy and she deserted the project after we pushed out the gasket. Next, put in the lower bolt. Do the drivers side first, since it has less room than the passenger side, then do the passenger side. Hope it works out as well for you as it did for us ……..AL
