5 speed vs. 3.9 diff - either or both?

The present 948 with a Cooper S Head, Cam, Header, and HS-2's is "Spritely" That engine loves to rev and rev and pulls strong to 6k + without an issue. But more torque and HP is needed. Estimating 75 from the 1,326 based on the build with a Street Cam, will reuse LCB Header and move over the HS-2's with some needle changes.

Sounds right.
My 1275 (with 20 over pistons) has a mediocre cam (I think) but with the renewed head and HS2's it does pretty well.

Another package with a Red Bow on it. Master Cylinder already resleeved to 3/4". 1st Winter Project will be Front end rebuild to Discs, Purple Graphite Impregnated Bushings, Discs, Sway Bar,
Rear end will get Dif from 4.22 to 3.9, Ist gear will now be usable, New Backing Plates, 3/4" Wheel Cylinders, Subaru Sealed Wheel Bearings, Brake lines modified, paint and cleanup of differential.

New Wire Harness, Speedhut Gauges, New Insterior, Tonneau, and Top. That's enough dollars spent and still will need to drive ugly to get the bugs out next Spring, Summer and Fall. And get pained in Winter. Reassemble hopefully complete by June 2018.

Sweet!

Boink: have a look at https://www.britishcarforum.com/bcf/showthread.php?107180-Shifter-Cupola-for-Datsun-5-speed for the fibreglas cupola that jeff (hardtop67) built for our two BEs. The yellow Sprite is running and the can (cupola?) is working just fine with the stock BE rubber boot, with no interference with our lever - which Rivergate welded up (if memory serves); our Silver Sprite also has the same cupola, but it'll be later this year before we modify the shift lever. Contact Jeff if you want one for your car; I'm extremely happy with the way mine turned out and how it resolved the issues of replicating the stock BE cupola appearance and working with the Datsun tranny. Holler if you'd like more pictures, as we'll hopefully tuck her away early next week (got snow today, but Monday is supposed to be nice, and 'tucking away' involves clearing the garage out). Later, Doug

Thanks, yes, I saw this thread and am still contemplating the option. Are there any photos of the fiberglass version installed without the boot in place (spying inside)?

Forecast is a bit poor tomorrow but I'll see about taking some shots sans tonneau and rubber boot. I presume 1st, 2nd, 5th, and reverse would be ideally ideal? Doug

Ill be getting one as well and once I hear from my pm to Jeff that they are ready I'll place my order.

I actually have some plans in the works for a custom shifter that would not only have the correct offset, but would also encompass a quick shift setup. The entire thing would eliminate all the issues with position and interference with the stock metal can and original rubber gaiter. I already have a quote for all the pieces, and it will take a substantial investment to have this kit tooled up, so I'm holding back for now. If I had 10 -15 people with committed interest, I would forge ahead. Anyone seriously interested, feel free to contact me.

OK, because this can be confusing, here are two more shots.
1) my original shifter (for a Morris Minor) prior to cutting the weld, shortening and re-welding. Gary's is above it with a different off-set welding.
2) Gary's shifter in-situ... showing his offset which could stand to be just a bit more.

My "new" one is fully offset by the width of the shaft or base.

That would be an excellent product... and one wouldn't have to do all the fettling/custom-fooling that I had to do (and I had the luxury of having a 5 speed installation nearby to consult with). A plug-and-play would save a huge amount of time and effort (that would reliably work).

Gerard,
That would be most excellent! I really like the idea of a short shift kit incorporated in a lever that would fit without modifying the original car parts. Details and projected price/timeframe please.

Boink - my tonneau cover is kind of frozen in place; forecast is warm for Monday so I'll take some shots then of the shifter sans gaiter. Doug

Thanks Doug. That would be nice. Much appreciated.

I'd be interested in that custom shifter as well, dependent on price. I like not having to modify the original car if possible.

X2 Gerard. One less thing to fettle with. Short and sweet like the one Scott M. built for 60FROG aka BUG I with a fat shift ball.

Mark: here's a series of photos that will hopefully help: the shift lever (in order of the photos) is in 1st; then 3rd, then 5th, then 5th again (different angle to show clearance).
The shots I took of reverse are too blurry to add. The shifter (if memory serves) was modified by Rivergate.
Clearances to the cupola are one full finger/thumb width for 1st, 2nd, and reverse, and about a 1/4" for fifth. The stock rubber gaiter fits very well and does not interfere with the shifting.
Jeff cut the hole in the cupola to match the stock BE can, in both location and diameter. The first photo is in first; the second in second; the third photo shows the shifter in fifth as does the fourth photo (showing that 0.25 inch clearance).

krikey! not sDSC_0911.jpgDSC_0915.jpgDSC_0916.jpgDSC_0918.jpgure what happened, but let's try the photos again (same order: first gear; second gear; fifth; and fifth again.

Thanks Doug. Very useful.
My 5 speed with custom-made shifter will go in very shortly (a day or so?), and then I'll see how it looks/works... and make a decision.
That fiberglass unit looks very nice.

[EDIT: because I put about a 10 degree angle in the shifter, per earlier photos I posted, it would seem that I am nowhere near the hitting the original base. We'll see how it holds up. Again, my shifter is like what Gerard used to provide and is contemplating again.]

Thanks Doug. Very useful. Does the stock rubber boot ever bunch up and jump out in 5th?
