TR6 $4600 for TR6 engine rebuild?

I know we are supposed to lay low on Ebay cars, so no auction number given here. BUT, $4600 spent to have their TR6 engine rebuilt? I don't think that any repair shop could possibly pad a bill that high.
Let's say even at a grand in new engine parts, that's $3600 in labor charges. I can't buy that one.

Priced any extensive machine shop work lately? Likely more than a $1000 in parts as well anymore.

An engine with that price tag should have a warranty from a reputable shop. VERY little would be re-used other than the block, crank, connecting rods and head. All of which would see the machine shop. Then, add new pistons, rings, bearings, valves, valve stem seals, all new engine seals/gaskets, new camshaft, new rockers and rocker shaft, etc... etc... then add in about 20 hours of non-machine shop labor, especially if they have to R&R the engine. That price tag would constitute a complete rebuild, not a refurbish.

I drew up a parts wish list the other day. It totalled over $2300.00. That is not including what I have already spent(around $1400) or machine work(which will probably be around $1000. I've already had some of the machine work completed. The wish list includes some things that I probably won't buy, so drop that to about $1400.
If you have a shop build an engine and they send it out for machine work, quite often they will tack a fee on top machining fee.
If you add cam bearings, I've heard charges ranging from $300.00 to about $650.00.
If I had a shop pull the engine, had them do the entire rebuild/purchasing of parts and all that is involved with a rebuild then install the engine, I would be looking at pretty darn close or maybe more than $4600. If you start building a HIGH performance engine, then the sky is the limit.
Unfortunately, nothing is cheap.

I'm of the same opinion. Certainly not an outrageous amount for a correctly done rebuild.

2k+ just for a stock head rebuild round these parts...

I bought my used head on eBay for $150. I got lucky, it was fine.

I spent $650 at the machine shop for a complete rebuild with new seats, valves, guides, valve grinding, resurface (-0.080") and cc of every chamber. That was very fair here in New England.

I asked him if I brought in an engine if he would do it. For the boil out, line bore, cam bearings, rod truing, crank grinding, deck resurface, new freeze plugs and oil galley plugs, etc., I would probably spend another $1,500 to $1,800. That does not include assembly, which is fine, I can do that myself.

So to me, that price is fair, because it does include a warranty.

TRF does rebuilding and I have heard that they do great work, with the Spadafore family now doing the work. They were famous for racing engines when I lived in PA. I just got a reconditioned rocker arm assembly from them that looked better than new for less than the price of the new parts. I would not hesitate to send anything to them, either.

Especially if line bored and cam bearings are installed. I had mine done earlier this year and even with a very reasonable shop bill I was over that mark.

But it runs great and I have a guarantee.

A few less cylinders also! My Herald engine has about $1,500 worth of new parts in it.
