1500 CFM anyone?

Re: 1500 CFM anyone up-date

Greg,
Great and thanks! Are those small (#10?) machine screws that are going throught the bracket with the head inside the pedal box? Did you just use the orginal holes in the box and then thread the holes in the bracket?

Re: 1500 CFM anyone up-date

Hi Lin,
Yep, that’s exactly what I did. Screws are 10-32’s with a little thread locker on them. Though it sounds flimsy, there is additional strength from the pedal shaft itself. Also, the top of the bracket has a tab that rests on the pedal box opposite of the 3/8ā€raised seam. So it’s locked in there pretty well.

Re: 1500 CFM anyone up-date

I have a question about hooking up the brake booster vacuum line. I’m not even sure if the Tri-carbs had the booster option, I think it started with the BJ7s? Anyway, I have the vacuum line running off the front manifold at present. I’ve been struggling with the thought of tapping into the balance pipe instead, in between the front and middle manifolds. Any thoughts? Seems like it would keep things more even if it was connected to the pipe instead. Here is how it’s configured at present, aluminum pipe from front manifold wrapping around the valve cover. See arrow. Thanks.

Hi Greg,
My thoughts,
You "might" have slightly more vacuum with a multiple or central takeoff point, but probably not worth the trouble. The plumbing is so clean now that it would be a shame to change it if not needed. In reality, you already have all cylinders pumping through the existing manifold equalizing tubes.

Cars with radical cams that don't have much vacuum often use a vacuum storage can (accumulator?) with check valves, maybe two quart capacity, to keep the booster working when temporary low engine vacuum conditions occur. The last one of these that I had direct experience with was my Chrysler 300D. See attached pic, it's the black can on the left inner fender panel. It was good for about four brake applications with the engine not running. Some boosters accomplish this right in the booster body via a check valve. I don't know how your booster is set up.

I would certainly give it a driving try, as is, first. I think an accumulator, if needed, could be added later. There are some clean looking "cans" available on the street rod market.

Your project is looking good as always,
D

Nice job, as is! It looks like it belongs.

Re: 1500 CFM anyone up-date

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the thoughts. I got tunnel vision and forgot what the balance pipe did. Always god to have a second pair of eyes and a functioning brain. My cam shouldn’t cause too much problem with vacuum. It’s not a ¾ grind, more like 11/16.

Nice motor you have there. Looks like you could have entered it in the wheel stand competition I saw on Speed Channel the other day.

Re: 1500 CFM anyone up-date

Wooo Hooo, they’re in! I wrestled with one bolt for a long time. The bottom bolt on the rear intake to head. Once I was past that it was pretty smooth sailing. Need to tweak a couple of things (fuel lines). I ordered a Heim joint for the throttle cable last week, called today and they said that it shipped and would be here April 26th! Are they kidding? Anyway, I’m happy with the way it finally came out. Can’t wait to see if it actually works. (crosses fingers).

Greg, Looking great! Where are you using the heim joint for the throttle?

Re: 1500 CFM anyone up-date

HI Greg, if you are using the stock Healey booster it contains its own accumulator and will maintain braking for about Four stops after the engine is shut off.A similar feature is included in the replacement unit available from the usual suspects. They will run just fine off the set up you have there now.--Fwiw--Keoke

Re: 1500 CFM anyone up-date

Hi Lin,
It will attach to the lever on the throttle shaft (see arrow). I haven’t had any luck finding what I wanted locally. It needs to have a 3/16ā€ hole and a female 10-32 end. This will thread onto one of those Verlocks which attaches to the cable.

Hi Keoke,
When I disassembled my booster, it was pretty pitted inside. I’ve installed one of those PBR units. PBR’s website didn’t have any real info on the booster. I'll look at the paperwork that came with it. Otherwise, I’m calling Tom’s Imports on Monday. I bet you figured I wouldn’t have a simple answer. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: 1500 CFM anyone up-date

Rolled the car out of the garage today. Turned the engine over sans plugs to build some oil pressure, all of the sudden, oil started dripping from the gauge. DRAT! Found the fiber washer still in its package, tightened everything down, tried again. Pressure came up immediately. Installed the plugs, put the fuel pump fuse back in… The moment of truth. Turned the key, starter turned for 3 seconds, nothing. Tried again, one cylinder fired. Gave the gas pedal a stab (no choke installed at this time) Turned the key and the engine roared to life. I was actually stunned at how smooth it ran, considering the carbs weren’t dialed in or the timing done (except static). Ran the engine for 20 minutes, oil pressure good, temperature went to an indicated 190 and hovered (after shutting it off, the temp went no higher than 200). Alternator looks like it’s charging. After cleaning the garage some, I started it up again and turned the car around under its own power and drove it back into the garage. Oh, I also fixed the leaks in the fuel system. Now that I can get it in and out of the garage, I can finish up the body work. That has been a real challenge in such a confined space. What can I say, I’m tickled pink.

You must feel a real sense of acomplishment on getting her fired up after so long!
Way to go! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Hey Hey!! Congrats Greg. I am interested in the functionality of yout throttle cable set-up. Are you pleased, or too early to tell?

Re: 1500 CFM anyone up-date

Hi Lin,
So far the cable system is working fine. I need to tune the carbs today, so I’ll know more later. I had forgotten about your question regarding the heim joint after it arrived in the mail. Sorry. Here is where it went.

Re: 1500 CFM anyone up-date

Hi John,
RomanH just installed the dual Mikuni kit on his TR6 also. He says it is a big improvement over the original carbs. Have fun with it, I am. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
