Our new fridge

I agree David. It is interesting to see the twist and turns the topics take here.

Bas- links don't open

Had the Sears folks out this week for an annual maintenance on the refrigerator.
I asked him about "the internet of things" as far as appliances. He rolled his eyes.
The screen in the front of the door that does it all and connect to The AlGore...when it goes bad, it's $1500 to replace...and when questioned further, SOME units won't work at all when it goes bad...but some do.

The screen is far more than we paid for the whole refrigerator.

Annual maintenance on a refrigerator?

An unreliable, networked, and hyper-expensive digital screen on a refrigerator?

This is ridiculous.

Actually was listening to the radio about the Internet of Things - and, while singing its praises the guest did wryly note that a recent power outage had literally shut down everything in the house.

OTOH, in our last house we got a new barn door up/ freezer down fridge - which we bought in Florida (scratch and dent!) and moved to Canada. The little latch which holds both doors shut together broke - and, after a very intense phone call and a search to find the CSA (Canadian Standards Association) without which they would not have honoured the warranty (Sears Canada) (we found it) they came out and replaced a (I figure) $2 part with a $1300 new door. amazing. I kept the old door just in case.

I have never done the maintenance bit, but this time SWMBO wanted it...so to make her happy, I did.
And we do NOT have one with a screen.

Ok - you've got me curious. What things were done for the maintenance?

TM

There really isn't much to maintain. It's a sealed system. Bout the most to do is clean the dust off and degrease the heat exchanger/ condenser. I would expect there is no adjustment on the thermostats
as most are now electronic. One thing that they may do is level the fridge, helps to keep it quiet. You might have them turn off the fridges ability to auto connect to your wifi. Fridges now do spy on you.

Roll and check seals and gaskets. Temp check output of compressor, evap, condensor....BUT: The biggie is "maintain warranty".

Speaking of refrigerators.

Anybody want a fully functional 1948 General Electric?

Going to the dump when my buddy's house sells.

Does it still work ok?

Flawlessly. My good friend is moving to Tucson, and he really hates to see this unit go to the dump.
He pulls it out and vacuums the coils on the back once or twice a year (can't recall what he said exactly), and runs the knob to "DEF" every 90 days, and dumps the tray on the bottom.
In the garage, used for cold drinks and extra stuff storage.

Thanks. It's still working after 69 years. Me too (I was born in 1948 ...)

I wonder how many years it would run with professional annual maintenance visits and digital access.

Pretty sure when the power goes out in my house it pretty much shuts it down.

Pretty sure even before the everything net was invented it did
:angel2:

 Indeed - but when the power comes on these things don't restart.

My last electric bill was $115.36. Can't really figure out the bill. Says Eversource (our supplier) Generation service Chrg 350 KWh @$0.07874=$27.56; plus COMMUNITY ENERGY CEO Generation Service Chrg. $4.55 plus Delivery Services (8 items) - $49.88, plus Other charges or credits $33.37. WTF does all that mean? Anyone have any idea?

I have been in meetings we're the life of a product is adjusted by the quality of the components
base on the customers expectations to purchase again .
yea designed to only last long enough to keep customer returning.
i was amazed and thankful when I no longer had to attend those teleconference meetings

The meetings were probable run by the accounts department not the engineering department.

The company I worked for for 35 years started it's downward spiral when it went public and the numbers came first. They had been in business for 150 years at that point.
