TR6 TR6 oiling trunnions

Hey guys

OK I assume this question has been asked to death, but I certainly haven't had any luck in figuring out the solution. I've tried a number of ways to oil the TR6 trunnions. Everything from standard grease guns to Mercury Marine outboard motor grease gun fittings, which apparently is supposed to do the trick. All I get is a big oil slick on the floor for my efforts. Should I hire the Pope to get the job done? Has anyone used grease successfully? British Leyland engineers couldn't use the standard grease/grease nipple setup. Oh no. "Hey, let's really annoy mechanics and enthusiasts with a completely different system that will boost sales of liquor and the use of foul language".

Have a little mercy. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

with thanks.

Recently I rebuilt the front suspension and being lazy and a skeptic, have always used a moly graphite grease instead of the recommended oil. There was very little wear on the trunnions and the originals were a tighter fit than the replacements I had on hand. I will concede that some of the common chassis grease tend to become dry&hard with time.

Sounds to me like you've got something else going on. Could the zerks be broken or missing? I know that, in some cases, the factory supplied plugs that have to be replaced with zerks for lubrication (and then put back).

To use the Mercury Marine pump, put it on the zerk and then turn the pump upside down so the oil can run from the tube into the pump. It might leak a drop or two, but should be capable of forcing oil into the zerk.

Anyway, grease should work fine; in fact that's what the TR2-4 use in that joint.

I've been oiling mine for the last 6 or 7 years. As Randall says keep the tube of oil up and pump away, then wipe up the little that overflows out.

Thanks guys for your input. The zerk fittings are all there, but maybe they are plugged, and need to be replaced....? I didn't have the little plastic caps on them. So I'll try again with the marine oiler upside down. If all else fails, I'll just lock the garage, throw away the keys and start collecting stamps.

Thanks again. Much appreciated.
Dave.

Zerks will clog if not used. Pull them out and clean or replace them. Also check out 00 grease which is what I use. It's a semi-liquid grease.

How tight should the fit be on the lower bolt that goes through the trunnion? I know there must be some movement there, but no grease goes to the bolt. I can't find a tolerance listed anywhere. Mine were rusted but not frozen. The new bolt has some play in it when placed in the trunnion.

That sounds like a good choice, can you get it at local chain auto parts stores? do you know if it comes in the smaller standard tubes you can use with grease guns?
