The UBSCC club picked up a lot of TR3-4 parts from a family. Lots of transmission parts. Probably 3 total transmission in pieces. But, none are overdrive cars. If there is something specific you need, let Pat or I know and we can contact the present storage to see if we have one. Just remember, these are used parts and I don't know why the PO took them apart.

After teardown, it looks looks like I'll be able to get by with a new countershaft, synchros, bearings and seals. TRF has a kit for around $450 but the same parts at Moss are under $300, even choosing their "premium" sychros. So does anyone have any experience with either or both of these options? I certainly don't mind paying more if the quality is better. Or is there another supplier I should consider?
Hopefully one of you who has been down this road can help. I'm having trouble setting the end float on the layshaft - I can install it and it will turn freely but there is zero end float. All of the guides I've seen say to reduce the size of the distance piece (collar) to move the large gear further down the shaft thereby increasing the free play.
However, my large gear is already flush with the end of the layshaft so reducing the length of the distance piece isn't going to get me anything. It's almost as if I need to have the transmission case machined down. I'm using new thrust washers on both ends. Help!
I was going to say...I have a spare TR4 Transmission but it looks like you dove right in since you wanted to keep the original transmission! Well, I actually have two spares now but I'm keeping the original as a spare since I put a Toyota 5spd in mine. Good luck with the rebuild!!!!
I decided to take a flat file to both of the forward and rear bosses for the countershaft and managed to find the minimum .007" float so that was good enough for me. I assembled and bench tested it successfully, so it's currently back in the car with two bolts. Final reassembly and test drive tomorrow, hopefully. Wish me luck!
Great success! Moss Motors warns that the "premium" synchros would take several hundred miles to wear in, but it shifts better than ever with 5 miles on it. Bonus! Now to put all of that interior back together. :nightmare:
Thanks, Perry. First time digging into the guts of a transmission and it was actually easier than I expected. The TR transmissions are fairly simple and there's a ton of good info online about rebuilding them, thankfully.
I forgot that you were a plate guy - I got a great deal on this set at a VW swap meet last year. Plus I like that only 61/62 TR4s can wear the yellow plates. The fact that '62 is the most common sticker just made my life easier!
I just realized that photobucket broke every single image in this thread with their new 3rd party hosting policy. Very frustrating. I'm going to have to transfer everything over to Imgur and update every single post that has an externally-linked image. So bear with me.
Nice car, I missed the gearbox part, good for you. I was amazed when mine worked.
Photobucket at $60 a months is nuts, they must be after a different sort of customer than us.

Aloha Mink - Thanks for taking the time to put the photos back in your thread. I just moved back to SC from Hawaii and my old college TR4 (CT16696L) has been waiting for almost 20 years for restoration and yours is an inspirational example of a 'white dash' TR4.

It's been a while, so time for an update, I guess. I spent a few very frustrating and anger-inducing weeks dealing with the dash pad/windshield frame/crash pads. Still not 100% happy with them, but whachagonndo? I don't know why those crash pads are supplied half-finished. What a royal pain in the ass they are.
In happier news, the last expensive order arrived - the interior!
Mink...bringing up an old post, but did your seat kit with TRF come with extra material to wrap around the bottom seat bases in the front, sides and back on the driver (tilt) seat? My Moss seat didn't and they say they don't provide it. So I'm guessing I'll have to buy extra.
