Windscreen Washer Fluid Pump

I couldn't understand why, when I tested my washer fluid pump on the bench it worked fine, and yet when I installed it in Harold it pumped no water at all.

Now I have just been browsing through the Owner's Guide part of the Bentley manual, which has a diagram of the connections between the pump and the water bottle. And it is the *other way around* to how it's connected in Harold! In other words, the pipe from the washer bottle in Harold is attached to the frontmost nozzle on the pump, whereas in the Bentley manual it shows it connected to the rearmost nozzle!

Which of the pump's nozzles is to be connected to the washer bottle: the front or the rear?

Ack. Harold is full of surprises. Not sure of the connection as ours is a manual pump on the dash. Is it 'blowing bubbles' into the bottle? Did you try disconnecting the output side and see that the pump is pushing fluid?

Sometimes those pumps will run like crazy but not pump because the impeller has become disconnected from the motor shaft. When you had it benched it pumped fluid?

Other thing is: the little spray nozzles can easily get plugged just from car wax. A piece of fine wire will usually work to clear 'em.

...just a couple of thoughts.

By "fine wire" think needle or safety pin or some such.

I didn't get a chance to look at it again today. I've been fitting the new brake master cylinder I got from Victoria British, bleeding the brakes (again!), and finishing up my wing repair job and fitting wing mirrors.

The repair job wont win any prizes, but it looks fine at a cursory glance :smile:

Of course I meant "door" repair, not "wing" repair. I ended up using a very thin smear of Bondo, then sanding with increasing grit to 320, then primer, then sanding with 1800, then more primer, then 1800, then a couple of coats of white topcoat.

The white isn't quite the same as the white on the rest of the car ... it's more "blue". In sunlight that's quite noticeable. I figure that at some point I'm going to get the whole car painted anyway, so it's good enough and presentable.

Tomorrow's jobs are 1) fit a hood strut, 2) fit the new handbrake cable, and 3) (if I still have time) look at the dwell and timing ... I received a Dwell meter off Ebay which I'm keen to try out.
