MGB White wire wheels on an MGB?

Country flag
Offline
By all accounts, I understand MGBs came with silver wire wheels. Yet on my 68 B, it appears that it either came with white wire wheels or sometime very early the owner went to the effort to COMPLETELY change the wheels to white - the inside of the hub where the splines are is white (under the grease), the inner part of the rim where the band is to protect the tube from the spokes is white, etc. It certainly seems like a LOT of effort was put into making them white unless they came that way new. The PO painted them silver and you can see the white under the silver in spots. There is nothing under the white except metal. Just curious. Thanks!

What's the cross-fit?
MGA's were painted, right?
Any chance somebody stuck their MGA wheels on it when they sold it?
I don't know if they fit or not....just asking....

Spline count same, A is 15", B is 14".
I had read somewhere where folks were sandblasting rusty B wheels and painting them...inside and out.
Another possibilty, eh?

They should be silver. I definitely would NOT want white wheels if you have a disk brake car. They won't remain white for long.

Actually, I have been contemplating painting the wheels Ford Black Jade - a late 60's, early 70's Mustang color - and having the outer edge of the rim painted Argent. My car is BRG or Mallard so the dark green/black wire wheels might look really good. Sort of an homage to the cars of the 20's & 30's such as this one:

How about painting the spokes day glo green with the rim in sort of a fucia color? Paying homage to the Fast and the Furious?

Peter,

Did you ever paint your wires black? I'm considering doing the same thing on my BRG roadster. I'm going bumperless with a Sebring kit and think it would look great. I'd be interested in seeing pictures....

I have the stock, steel wheels painted like that on my race car (below).
I've been painting wheels in this style for 40 years.
Everyone says it looks like the wheels on a UPS truck, but I like it.

My MGB wheels are painted all "aluminum" (flat silver).

Note: I had to look up "Argent" since I didn't know what that was. Apparently a silver metallic gray.

But just think Nial, during the off racing season, you can contract to UPS and deliver packages, by super fast delivery! :driving:

Use in a sentence:

"waiter, could you tell me where the rest room is?"

"yes sir, Argent's room is in the back of the restaurant."

Yeah, Argent is a very descriptive colour. Been a lot of arguments over the years of exactly what formulae is required to obtain it.
In the old Ford hobby, lots of stuff was painted Argent. Grille assemblies on pickemup trucks, for one, which I solved by painting mine blue.

I believe there is an old Chrysler color that is an extremely close match. I think Duplicolor had it at one time, but they've dropped a lot of old colors in the past. Other than Engine colors, I agree that Argent is probably the one of most disputed colors I know of. A good paint shop can computer match it, they just need a chip. PJ
