TR2/3/3A what primer / paint ?

Because of covid i have to drive my tr3a every day to work,so restoration is difficult.
i have to take panels off ,repair, replace and of course add primer.
Does any one have an idea what paint or primer i can use so my tr3 does not look like a patch work quilt?

Hi Chris.

Are you planning to have the car completely repainted eventually? or just looking to cover up the "patina" to preserve the metal for a while?

Wondering ... if your TR is a 1961, it's likely a TR3b, not a 3a.

This is the primer I used on my TR3A
It is a 2 part primer. Went on easily.

That's tough to do. Remember, primer generally does not protect from rust. It might work to use a rattle can to cover parts until you can spray the whole car. Sometimes painting one panel then another may cause the colors to change due to getting the mix correct or the fading over time. Maybe for a time having a Dalmatian car for a while is the way to go. I drove my Spitfire on drive to Flagstaff early in the restoration it was primer gray, rust, white, bondo pink, bare metal, with assorted parts bright red. It was a great conversation starter. :smile-new:

A two part Epoxe primer (as a first primer) is an excellent rust inhibitor. Unless you paint over it within 7 days, you will need to scuff it before recoat. If you intend to apply a spray on body filler, don't do that until you are ready for the color coat. Epoxet does not stay attached to surfaces that have been treated with rust inhibitors such as phosphoric acid unless the inhibitor is sanded or thoroughly washed off with dish detergent.

You will need to completely mix the paint each time you go to paint a panel after it sits. If you fail to completely mix the paint, even for one panel, then you will start your patchwork you talk about.

At the shop here, we use an acid etch wash primer to set the ground work for the 2K primer(Azko-Noble). There is for us , an advantage
over epoxy primers. The afore mentioned need to re-sand a panel outside the re-coat window to get proper grip. The 2K primer sands in a flash
where as the epoxy is more like a brick to sand. Panels freshly stripped can be sprayed in acidwash and left for weeks with no rust flash, then primed
at a latter date(with their sister panels). The cleanup for acid wash is much easier than epoxy also. When we have a frame we will use epoxy as we then
go strait for paint cutting out a step.

Turns out my car is tr3a but 1960!, i just presumed the other guy i bought it from was correct.
