Red Lead Primer

OK, I have found and purchased a quart of red lead primer from a marine hardware store. My intentions are to primer my new floorboards with this stuff, just as the original. Tell my why I shouldn't. I will come back over with some Eastwood's Chassis Black coating. Totally bulletproof as I see it.

The Redlead is a good product for body work.
In my experince with it, you only want to use it in a very thin coat. (sandable)

I think we are talking about two different products here. Red Lead Primer is not the same as the commonly used red primer paint. You really don't want to be sanding Red Lead Primer.
Red primer is a primer coat for painting, as in gray primer.
Red Lead is primarily for rustproofing.

Marine industry calls it 'anti-fouling'... bottom paint. Nothing wrong with using it as you intend, Bill. Covering it with the Chassis paint or an equivalent will seal it well. It is somewhat porous so needs that top coat.

Make sure the top coat is compatible with the red lead primer. Some of the lead primers have linseed oil in them which works fine with other linseed oil or oil based paints but not necessarily with modern auto paints.

A two part epoxy primer sealer is the better option as it is chemically cured rather then air cured and provides a hard finish not available with oil based paint.
