Weber Sidedraft DCOE

Our 'new' 80 MGB has a weber sidedraft carb installed with a peirce manifold and headers, so I've got a couple questions:

1) Where can I get a replacement air filter element...moss only lists one for the downdraft, is it the same??

2) At certain rpms the car makes a weird sound...kinda sounds like a crackling noise. It runs great, very powerful, no smoke, starts first crank....But since I've never heard an MGB sound like this I am wondering if it has somethnig to do with the different carb or headers??

DCOEs make a very distinct sound. When installed on a B engine, with siamesed ports it sounds like kinda a real fast popping kinda noise. Not a bad thing, and those "in the know" will know what you got!!

Contact peirce manifolds and see what they offer for air cleaners. They are a big weber supplier, so they should have something for you. (sorry, I have no phone number for them, but I am sure they are on the web someplace.

Wow sounds similiar to our set up except we went with the downdraft Weber, pierce manifold and header. We havent really had any time to drive it since the exhuast is still needing to be installed and some other stuff....

That sounds like the noise I am talking about, I am glad it's normal. We used to have a MGB LE with the same setup, except a downdraft and I didn't remember it beings so noisy.

If you want a less expensive filter option, EMPI makes one for the DCOE that clears the master cylinder for under $20 - a lot cheaper than the K&N. Companies that supply VW Beetle performance parts are the easiest place to find them. Here's what it looks like:

Maybe I'll get used to it...But I don't really like it yet, doesn't sound refined enough. But my car starts great in the cold with it - so I am not gunna complain.

When you talk about the DCOE, you're talking about the ultimate in side-draft carburetters.
And you don't like it? Hmmmmm...

It may bear repeating here, but first, there is no relation other than the name between the downdraft carb, often used to replace a worn out single Stromberg, and the DCOE series, which are normally used for performance purposes but sometimes installed just as eye candy.

The DCOE can be set up to run quite well on a stock engine, but they offer no advantage over a pair of stock twin SUs, and as noted, the sounds made are different.

You might be able to swap straight across for a set of SUs ready to bolt on, and I think that would be a good move. Sticking a DCOE on a low compression engine with stock retarded cam isn't going to get you much except possible tuning issues.

Well...it runs great now(or it was until earlier today when the fuel pump gave out :frown: So I am just gunna leave the carb setup alone for now....and count my blessings that it doesn't have the factory auto choke!
