TR2/3/3A Tramp bar for rear of TR3 or??

Group,
I put a tube shock conversion on my TR3a . The ride is much better and it does not bottom out in the rear anymore. But, I have found one disadvantage. At speeds above about 65, when the car hits a big bump, I notice the rear feels as if the axle is shifting a little under the body. IE: left to right or right to left. On our old race car, we added what we called a tramp bar but I am not sure if that is the right term. This bar prevented the axle from moving sideways. Has anyone put one of these on their car? And did you build it yourself, or buy it somewhere?

thanks

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

I think you are talking about a panhard bar. There was one guy on here who had one on his project car...a very high end build that I'm not sure was ever finished. Some of the guys here will remember...I think the project was hampered by an ex wife dumping paint and nuts and bolts in the block...it either had a panhard bar on it or a watts linkage set up.

Possibly Tabcon -- bought a restored TR4 and proceeded to restore it again to an incredible degree. Finally moved to Dallas, sold it unfinished and went with a Porsche (and the single life). Lots of posts but alas the photo links are all dead.

I am definitely NO expert. But after rebuilding several TR4's and TR3's I would be looking at the bushings at the rear or maybe even the front of the springs if I had a concern about any feel of movement of the rear axle. They now make a conversion for the rear bushings to convert to metal instead of rubber. I put these on one of my TR4s. I also have one TR4 with stock rear shocks and one with tube rear shocks. I do not feel any appreciable difference in the ride between the cars. To me that shock jus tdoes not hold he body fromany side movement. That axle is firmly held in place by the springs and bushings.

Yes, I have the bronze bushings with the delrin washers installed on my 60 TR3A. Cant comment on their effectiveness as the car is not on the road yet.

Must be a spring/bush issue...assuming that your shocks have the correct travel/compression rate to suit your conversion.
I prefer rubber or poly bushes so as to absorb some of the road vibration.

My springs were just sandblasted and painted, the bushes are all New, not rubber but poly. Perhaps they still move too much.
