TR4/4A TR4A Rear Brake Wheel Cylinder Dust Shields

In the process of replacing the rear brake wheel cylinders and hoses,I notice there were no dust shields around the cylinders. Not even a piece of one. Its possible that a previous owner left them off but my question is, are the dust shields really needed? It seems as though dust could enter between the drum and backing plate anyway so would a little more ventilation be harmful? Thanks

I've run more without them than with them; can't say I've ever noticed any difference. Certainly as you say, they won't keep all dust out (nor water either). But maybe they do keep just a little dust out (for less wear on the drum); or maybe just a little water out when driving in the rain (for a better chance of having brakes) ?

All I now is that it's a pain to install the three clips and the shields.

O'course, it's easier if you get the right directions and ignore the illustrations (which are wrong in several factory manuals and other places).

Here they are

Note that the "distance piece" fitted first is the smallest clip. The "spring plate" is the larger clip that has the bent 'ears' on it. Once those two pieces are in place, both with the open end away from the handbrake lever; you can insert the handbrake lever. It may take a small amount of force, but it should pop into place with no more than a few love taps with a brass hammer.
