TR4/4A TR4 Under the Dash Vent Question

More pictures! As you can see there is a gap where my vents meet up with the firewall. I have one gasket from the car, but its a little small for the gap. (If this were in my home I would just wrap it in duct tape. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif) However, What do you suppose would be the best way to seal neatly this 1/2 inch gap?

For less than $5 at HomeDepot, you can get a roll of 5/8" round foam that is used for filling cracks before caulking windows and doors. It is in the weatherstipping section. Make a slight slit for the length of the piece that you need lengthwise to fit over the vent. Then contact cement or hotglue the two ends together.

Larry - I'm wondering if you have the original seal there. My seals are more like molded rubber than foam and easily fill a 1/2" gap. Perhaps a seal fashioned from weatherstrip rubber would be closer to original and fit better.

How about something like a door seal with the crimp on lip?

Larry, the felt seal you have on your hand is the one that goes against the dashboard end of the fresh air duct. The seal that goes against the firewall end is molded rubber as Geo reports, the picture he attached to his post is identical to my setup.

Butyl rubber rope caulk from NAPA. This stuff molds easily, sticks to itself and is easily smooth with spit. If done with care (and looking at the finish under your dash, this won't be a problem ), it will look like it belongs there, Larry. I have used this stuff for some instant grommets, especially around the part of my wiper shaft that goes into my firewall and it still looks better than the other rubber on the car, has never fallen off and seals the area completely from moisture. Get a box of this stuff, you will use it for everything.
