Timing Mark

Good Morning,

I am trying to locate the timing mark on the lower pulley for a 1970 MG Midget. I have washed it etc and cannot find a timing mark anywhere (front or rear of the pulley). Any suggestions?

Thanks

well..with no replies, I'll tell ya what little I know. On my early 1098 (no dampener) there is an obvious "v" slot cut into the pulley.
On my '74 engine (with dampener)..it was harder to find, but still there. Pretty sure it is on the engine side of the pulley.

I'm sure someone will answer with more in-depth answers.

Should find a v slot cut in the pully.

On the 1275 (which normally has a damper (big, thick)pulley the line is really just a scratch mark on the big part of the pulley. I have found that it is best to find it from the top of the engine (taking off the generator makes it easier to see) and paint a white stripe on it. If you try to find it from the bottom without the white stripe you had better have VERY good eyes!!

There's a special place reserved for whichever engineer thought that putting the mark and pointer at the bottom was the right thing to do. The MGB is the same way. Hap moved the Sprite's to the top, I really need to do the same with the B.

Just plain stoopid.

It's on the bottom! Holy crap, who'd a thunk it! I spent a few minutes last night looking for the timing mark and pointer on my (new to me) Sprite with no success. I guess 20-plus years of fooling with classic American cars did not adequately prepare me for Sprite ownership.

That'll make it sort of hard to hold the timing light and rotate the distributor.....

Wait until you come across a vehicle where you have to look through a gap in the bell housing for the timing mark.....

I was checking the timing on the B last weekend and pressed my wife into service to man the accelerator while I checked things.
